Is Diageo giving up on beer in Africa? 🍺 Yesterday Diageo announced they were selling their 58% stake in Guinness Nigeria, one of the biggest food and beverage groups in the country (and at one point the biggest market globally for the black stuff). Although the decision is understandable given the challenges created by the crashing Naira, having spent many years at Africa's #1 brewer, the wonderful SABMiller, (and also being a fan of Foreign Extra Stout) the decision still came as a shock. Diageo was always a major brewer in the continent but whereas Africa represented 15% sales a decade ago, with this exit, it'll now drop to just 8-9%. With this sale, the recent exit from Cameroon, and the sale of Meta Abo in Ethiopia (both to Castel) how long before it gives up on its beer assets - now only really EABL and a bit in South Africa - in Africa entirely? Tolaram takes over Diageo's shares in Guinness Nigeria: What the headlines didn’t say In selling its majority shareholding in Guinness Nigeria to Indonesian conglomerate Tolaram, Diageo was merely following the business practice it has executed in countries such as Cameroon, Ethiopia and Mauritius, South Africa and Namibia. Since beer sales only form 15% of its global turnover, with the Guinness brand posting 16% of its profit, Diageo has been fine-tuning ways to increase profitability. In Ethiopia, it sold its Meta Abo brewery to Castel in January 2022. In July of the same year, Diageo also sold its brewery in Cameroon to Castel for $460m and licensed it to produce the Guinness brand, as it did in Mauritius with Phoenix Beverages. As Diageo sold breweries in Africa, it invested in its brewing capabilities in Ireland, with $200m going towards a second brewing facility. The investment  was expected to free up space for Guinness at its home in Dublin, reported Global Drinks Intel last December. News reports claiming that the multinational is totally exiting Nigeria are misleading. Diageo will still maintain its footprints in Nigeria, going by the statement released by Guinness on Tuesday. In selling its Guinness Nigeria shares to Tolaram, Diageo will enter into long-term licence and royalty agreements for the continued production of the Guinness brand and its locally manufactured Diageo ready-to-drink and mainstream brands in Nigeria. The statement added: "In partnership with Guinness Nigeria and Tolaram, Diageo will continue to drive the brand and marketing strategy for Guinness in Nigeria, to ensure Diageo’s exceptional capabilities in brand building and innovation continue to drive long-term growth for Guinness in Nigeria".

Guinness 0.0 surges 48% in response to growing demand. The rollout — in Ireland — has surged from 250 pubs in March 2023 to more than 1,400 venues, currently. That was in March. Is this a pilot program? Of course it is. According to Statista, in 2023 Guiness was the sixth most popular beer brand in the U.S. From ‘Shelf Life’ … Increasing numbers of Irish consumers are embracing non-alcohol products, as new volume sales data from Guinness show that Guinness 0.0 on draught, had seen a 48.7% increase in volume sales between the end of February 2023 and the end of February 2024 across Irish pubs and venues. This confirms the major growth of non-alcohol beer in recent years, and the specific success of Guinness 0.0 since its introduction to the Irish market two and a half years ago. To support the increasing demand and to keep pace with evolving consumer habits, Guinness has been accelerating the rollout of draught Guinness 0.0. From 250 pubs in March 2023, to more than 1,400 venues serving draught Guinness 0.0 right now, with that number set to reach more than 2,000 outlets by the end of 2024. This increased demand, distribution, and availability of Guinness 0.0 is being met by sustained investment by Guinness including a new €25 million production facility for Guinness 0.0 at St James’s Gate in Dublin, announced last year. This new facility is brewing almost 90 million pints of Guinness 0.0 every year for the domestic and international markets and reflects a growing consumer demand for non-alcohol products in Ireland, Britain, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and America. This section relates to ABInBev's Non-Alcoholic beer marketshare and while they are the dominate player in Brazil with Brahma NA, they were slow to the gate in other markets where overall Heineken is double of ABInBev's share of the global Non Alc beer market. In the US they/Bud Zero concede they are third behind Heineken & Athletic.
