This last November we launched the Dove #CodeMyCrown initiative – the world’s first FREE and complete guide for coding Black hair in video games! It took lots of team effort to develop, one of those examples that require perseverance and hard work from everyone in the team, agencies and partners in the project. After these firsts weeks live, we are extremely proud of the response and appreciation it has had, especially in the gaming community.   Did you know that 85% of Black gamers believe video games poorly represent textured hair? Dove wants to change that.   Millions of Black gamers play for fun, a sense of community, and self-expression – yet, for all the technological advances in the gaming industry, the depiction of textured hair and protective styles continues to be limited, often highly stereotypical, and not representative of the breadth and beauty of its real-world counterpart.    Dove, in partnership with the Open Source Afro Hair Library, identified the top natural and protective hairstyles currently missing or misrepresented in video games. Together, they enlisted a team of Black 3D artists, programmers, academics, and stylists from around the world to develop a range of original hair sculpts that can lay the foundation for hundreds of virtual hair possibilities.    Code my Crown comes with step-by-step instructions, 360-degree photo mapping, cultural insight, and open-source code so that any developer - anywhere - can better model and represent textured hair and styles in the digital world.   Everyone deserves a chance to see themselves as heroes in the virtual worlds we create.
