“How to lose all of your market share, franchisees and profits in one years time” Pizza Hut 101 The writings on the wall for any and all national restaurant chains… Pizza Hut has alienated themselves so bad from the public image that their franchisees won’t even pay them to remain a franchise. Anywhere from 50-179 Restaurants closed overnight. Franchisees allege that Pizza Hut has not stayed relevant, nor competitive with Dominos, Little Caesar’s & Papa Johns, and have not made progress in upgrading technology and delivery apps. US-based Mexican quick service restaurant chain Del Taco has debuted its first Virginia restaurant at Chesapeake. The new store is part of a multi-unit deal aimed at broadening Del Taco's presence on the US East Coast. For example, in fiscal 2023, Del Taco signed 52 commitments in Florida, which would mark over 740% in growth for its local footprint once the restaurants open (prior to Oct. 1, 2023, there were only seven Del Taco restaurants open in Florida.) According to a report from Placer.ai, the drive-thru-only concept, CosMc's, which emphasizes its beverage offerings, witnessed over double the number of visits compared to a typical McDonald's location chainwide for the same month. Launched on December 7, 2023, CosMc's demonstrated three times the number of visits per square foot, despite having a smaller footprint of approximately 2,500 square feet, compared to the average McDonald's restaurant, which typically ranges from 4,000 to 4,500 square feet. The new format's success has prompted plans for additional locations in Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio by the end of 2024. McDonald’s is set to launch a new venture, CosMc’s, positioning it as a unique "beverage concept" with its debut location in Bolingbrook, Illinois. Unlike traditional McDonald's menus, CosMc’s won't feature classics like the Big Mac or french fries. Instead, it will focus on an extensive selection of beverages and treats characterized by bold and unexpected flavor combinations, vibrant colors, and functional boosts. The menu is tailored to cater to customers seeking an afternoon pick-me-up, offering a departure from the conventional fast-food experience. The 10 planned CosMc’s locations, slated to open by the end of 2024, will be smaller than typical McDonald’s outlets and may incorporate multiple drive-thru lanes, primarily concentrated in the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio areas. US pizza brand and family-owned business, #LittleCaesars has opened its second UK branch, as it gears up for a ‘year of growth’. It's already been a good week for the Motor city of #Detroit, with the Lions winning their first playoff game in 32-years (what was the longest playoff drought in NFL history). And now it is fascinating to see that #familyowned US F&B giant, Little Caesars Pizza is going to open its second UK restaurant, in Nottingham, having launched in Derby in 2022, as it makes a renewed, second attempt at the UK market, following the year 2000 closures of its previous 18-UK restaurants. The group, which claims to be the World's third largest pizza chain, with 4,000+ locations, is said to be looking ahead to a year of growth, with Little Caesars said to be planning London & Liverpool openings in 2024. Founded in 1959, by the married couple Mike and Marian Ilitch, the business started in a strip mall in Garden City, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, named "Little Caesar's Pizza Treat", with Marian Ilitch still acting as Chair today. In 1998, Little Caesars is believed to have filled what was then the largest pizza order ever, filling an order of 13,386 pizzas from the VF Corporation of Greensboro. It will be fascinating to see what the business has learnt from it's previous spell in the UK, and whether it's status as a family-owned business, allows it to take a longer term horizon - toward re-establishing itself in a hugely competitive, price sensitive, UK hospitality market. Financial distress in the restaurant industry has led several fast-food and fast casual chains to file for bankruptcy, with businesses reorganizing, selling their assets or shutting down permanently. While struggling restaurant chains file bankruptcy, close down locations, and in some cases go out of business, a popular Boston fast-food chain is bucking that trend and intends to emerge from Chapter 11 with a plan to expand its footprint in New England by four times.
