Recently the world's first continent-wide nature restoration law was passed, aiming to enable the long-term and sustained recovery of biodiversity and resilient natural ecosystems. It will contribute to and support climate mitigation and adaptation. What I particularly like is the diversity of ecosystems included. It includes not only forests, but grasslands, rivers, lakes, pollinators, and marine ecosystems. https://lnkd.in/ekpCicNX #NaturalCapital #Biodiversity #Climatemitigation

Exciting news for nature in Europe! 🌳🌿🌷 The EU just proposed a new Nature Restoration Law to legally require Member States to restore ecosystems across 20% of EU land and sea by 2030, and all ecosystems in need by 2050. 📈 This includes binding targets for habitats like wetlands, forests, and agricultural areas. 🏞️🌲🌾 Member States must develop national restoration plans with assessments, planning, reporting and financing. 📑 The benefits will be huge - supporting biodiversity, climate goals, and disaster prevention! 🐞🌍🔥 The EU continues to lead in building a greener, more resilient world. #EUGreenDeal #RestoreNature #HealthyPlanet https://lnkd.in/exmFiSdn

🌿🌍 The European Commission has recently passed the #NatureRestorationLaw - a continent-wide effort to restore ecosystems for people, climate, and the planet. Why is it important? ⤵ 🔗 The law is a key element of the EU Biodiversity Strategy and aims to restore degraded ecosystems. 🌐 Recognising that over 80% of habitats are in a state of decline, the proposal highlights the importance of wetlands, forests, #grasslands, marine ecosystems, and more. 📈 It sets ambitious targets to cover at least 20% of the EU's land and sea by 2030, with the ultimate aim of restoring all ecosystems by 2050. The plan takes a broad approach, covering everything from pollinating insects to urban landscapes and agricultural ecosystems. 🤝 This aligns with the aims of #EUGrasslandWatch, which supports on-the-ground conservation efforts to help protect and restore grassland ecosystems Explore our website to find out more👇 http://cop4n2k.eu #NatureRestoration #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #EUGreenDeal

The European Nature Restoration Law, adopted by the EU Parliament, is a landmark initiative aimed at restoring degraded ecosystems across Europe. This law sets ambitious targets to cover at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, with the ultimate goal of restoring all ecosystems in need by 2050. It includes specific restoration targets for various habitats and species, including pollinators, forests, urban, agricultural, and marine ecosystems. This initiative is part of the broader EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and represents a significant step toward combating biodiversity loss and climate change. 🌱 What's hot in green innovation: The European Commission’s proposal for a Nature Restoration Law is the first continent-wide, comprehensive law of its kind. It is a key element of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, which calls for binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, in particular those with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters. Next week, 2 February 2024, is WORLD WETLANDS DAY! On this occasion, we celebrate the outstanding importance of wetlands for nature and people. These special ecosystems offer important contributions to human well-being, biodiversity conservation and nature-based solutions to climate change. At the same time, they are severely threatened by unsustainable human use and a changing climate. There is an urgent to better protect the few remaining wetlands in Europe and to significantly expand their restoration. The European Network of Nature Conservation Agencies (ENCA) has published concrete recommendations on how to achieve this: https://lnkd.in/dU7Gbnhi #worldwetlandsday #wetlands #biodiversity #enca #encanetwork #riverinewetlands #coastalwetlands #worldwetlandsday2024 #welttagderfeuchtgebiete #feuchtgebiete #bfn Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) Umweltbundesamt - Environment Agency Austria Photo: Mathias Scholz/UfZ

Look down! This is where the solution to climate and biodiversity crises is -peatlands 💚 They capture and store carbon. They prevent natural disasters. They are biodiversity hotspots. They boost water retention and quality. They regulate our climate. But our peatlands need to be ✨healthy✨ to deliver all these benefits! We can't effectively #RestoreNature without restoring drained peatlands. Yet, the European Parliament deleted peatland restoration in its position on the Nature Restoration Law. Peatlands are the key solution to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises. They must be included in the Nature Restoration Law! 💥A MAJOR WIN FOR HEALTHY AND RESILIENT EU LANDSCAPES 🎉 This week, we celebrate a monumental victory with the passing of the EU Nature Restoration Law! This law is a beacon of hope in our collective efforts to combat climate change and biodiversity loss. It sets ambitious targets to restore 20% of the EU’s degraded land and sea ecosystems by 2030. To meet these goals, EU countries must restore at least 30% of habitats covered by the law—from forests and grasslands to wetlands, rivers, and lakes—from poor to good condition by 2030, aiming for 90% by 2050. This represents a significant step forward for holistic landscape restoration. Healthy ecosystems are the foundation of our well-being, providing us with clean air, water, fertile soils, and a home for a vast array of biodiversity. Together, let's celebrate this huge milestone and continue our commitment to nurturing and restoring our beautiful natural environments for generations to come!💚🐝 #NatureRestoration #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #ClimateNews
