It's #WorldHealthDay! Partners in the field of injury prevention have helped reduce the rate of unintentional injury death in kids by 60%. As we continue our work & look toward the future of public health, we must address fatality data that shows that kids from communities that are marginalized & underserved are dying at higher rates. Public health’s future requires new initiatives that will have the highest impact on reducing deaths & serious injuries in the communities that are most affected.

As National Public Health Week comes to an end and we look toward the future of public health, I am proud of the initiatives we are taking at Safe Kids to prioritize addressing systemic issues and health disparities. Our work is shaped by Dr. Sadiqa Kendi's Injury Equity Framework. We are guided by leading experts in the field of unintentional child injury on our Equity Advisory Committee. We are driven by data from our Safe Kids Injury Risk Index to reach the children that need us most. Our mission at Safe Kids Worldwide each and every day is to protect and prevent unintentional injuries to children no matter where they live, play, and go to school. Over the years, we have helped reduce the rate of unintentional injury death in children by 60 percent. But, to protect every child and to provide the impact that every parent deserves, we must start identifying and engaging with communities that have been historically marginalized and underserved and are therefore at greater risk of preventable injury. I am excited to see the effort from other organizations within the field of injury prevention to incorporate equity like GHSA’s Equity and Engagement Committee. We must be proactive and recognize racism, poverty, and other barriers to equity in public health. Public health’s future requires new initiatives that will have the highest impact on reducing deaths and serious injuries in the communities that are most affected.
