My goal is to be a CTO of a cool company no matter the size and the economic value. I know that Is a very long journey, but “Dreaming is free!” Along the way, my goal is to like my job so much that I no longer see it as one. I want to bring good ideas to a production environment using my DevOps experience and would love to help people make their dreams come true. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK AT VESCAPE LABS? I chose VEscape Labs because their mindset is aligned with mine. We have very similar values and feelings about growing as a team and as a community. I also think this is a great opportunity for my professional career as I will get the chance to work with big and successful companies. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO FIX OR IMPROVE IN THE FIELD OF CLOUD AND TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT? Definitely, CULTURE. In my experience culture are one of the most underrated things in a team and not only small companies but big ones. Gene Kim, author of the Phoenix Project and DevOps Handbook, says: DevOps is a journey full of challenges, and rarely are those challenges simply because of the wrong technology or the wrong processes. In fact, the biggest and most difficult obstacles tend to be cultural. And, if you get the culture wrong, even if you get everything else right, you’re headed for frustration, extra cost, and likely failure. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? I love to spend time with family (wife and daughter) taking a walk, eating tacos, and watching movies is an amazing feeling. I also love riding my bike into the forest and crossing mountains - the feeling of seeing landscapes and that I can go anywhere just riding is awesome. IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY FICTIONAL CHARACTER AS YOUR IMAGINARY FRIEND, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I want to put together a lean and advanced team to build out some really awesome capabilities for the Defense and Civic Technology ecosystems. This cluster of initiatives are extremely non-traditional; they're focused on creating relevant features that enhance mission outcomes, that users enjoy and are eager to adopt. No box checking. ➡ Looking for Product Managers that have a bias for "commercialization". ➡ Looking for Full-stack Engineers that are eager to build data-intensive applications with some lightweight data engineering tasks. The pay, benefits, culture, and advancement opportunities are legitimately spectacular. This high-impact team will help discover and influence company direction in a lot of ways. These are some attributes that I think a person should have to enjoy this environment and experience: 💠 Love of craft - these are challenging capability needs with policies and environmental constraints that make development and prioritization challenging - by understanding and loving your discipline, I think it will help reduce the complexity of the problems that are being solved. 💠 Genuinely being proactive - every role will have a level of ownership, leadership, and inspiration. Always be trying to move the product forward; understand quality / speed tradeoffs. I think a person that's in love with their craft and willing to collaboratively share their candid opinions with others will help move these complex missions forward. 💠 Focus on operationalization - this isn't an R&D program or a situation where a legacy system can fester. The products you will be building need to be deployed and operationally accepted, ASAP. This environment simulates a real commercial market (but in the Public Sector) more closely than any other program I've supported. 💠 Few Assumptions - because of the speed and scrappiness of this team, I think being extremely self-aware and keeping assumptions in check would be very beneficial. The team should be eager to research and test their assumptions to reduce risk for operationalization. 💠 Fun and Friendly - delivery is hard, there's a major emphasis on reducing as much nonsense as possible so we can build cool stuff. This is a goofy and fun environment. Pace, time, and structure is all very negotiable. It's genuinely all about creating dependable outcomes with our software.
