What legacy will you leave? This is a question I often ask of leaders when we are in the midst of strategic planning. It’s an important question, but not one that’s easy to answer - because most leadership teams and boards are merely temporary stewards of a longer history in an organization. Last week, I was absolutely delighted to hang out with three of the founding members of Shakespeare In The Ruins as we talked about the remarkable legacy they created 30 years ago when they first performed Romeo and Juliet on a bootstrap budget and a dream. Could they have known that 30 years later, their wish would be thriving as Manitoba’s only Shakespeare company, selling out performances every summer under the artistic direction of Rodrigo Beilfuss and expert management of Sara Malabar? Could they have known that their dream would spark our school program and accessibility commitments - ensuring that everyone has a place in theatre (including those who haven’t always felt welcome)? Could they dream that their three public performances would lead to our partnership with Stony Mountain Penitentiary- where offenders have the opportunity to engage in the transformative experience of theatre? As we celebrated the opening night of Iago Speaks - another incredible feat - that our theatre is now running a full repertory season (we have two shows running back to back, with the same actors, 40 performances for 30 days straight) - I asked Deb Patterson, Lora Schroeder, and Arne MacPherson their thoughts on what made the organization so successful. They commented that one of the most important decisions they made was actually to step back and put the company in the hands of people who loved it. That by allowing for a changing board and staff, new life and ideas could be breathed into the company - keeping it current and agile. Ensuring it remained relevant for new audiences. It’s pretty insightful and inspiring as the current chair to hear such wisdom from these visionaries. It makes me think about decisions I’ve made in my career, to step back or out of the way, to create space for others to run. I’m curious about your thoughts on this. People can be so amazing. I love this story. It's nearly impossible to keep up with all that's happening in our world and so often it's gloom and doom. It used to be you could watch the nightly news for 30 minutes and get it all in one quick go. Now, the news cycle is 24/7 and people are doom scrolling to be sure they're not missing anything. But that's a slow drain on your energy and it just feeds stress. It can also feed the feelings of division. It can be hard to quit doom scrolling and some even have greater anxiety when they stop. Instead, might I suggest setting a timer for 30 minutes? When it goes off, pause what you're watching and look for some good news. Not only will that give you a break, but it sets an algorithm so when you go back to watching/listening, your options will include wonderful stories, good news, and maybe even a puppy or two. Take care of yourself and your mental health by balancing and expanding what you are taking in. Scottish Opera, Alex Reedijk, Vivienne Wood, INSPIRING CHANGEMAKERS LTD, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, #risingstars #leadershipdevelopment We are now half way through the Autumn programme of Rising Stars Flourish, Leadership Development Programme. Another terrific group of up and coming people who want to improve and develop their leadership skills, attributes and behaviours - more on that later. First though to thank once again, Scottish Opera, Alex and Vivienne for hosting our midpoint day at the Production Studios. What privileged access we were given behind the scenes. What a wealth and depth of #talent and #expertise we have here in #Glasgow. #Creators, #makers, #craftspeople, #artisans, #technicians of all types of skills. Lighting, sound, wigmaking, costume making, scenery building and painting and so much more. And not only at Scottish Opera but across the creative, arts and performance sector. #Glasgow is really and rightly recognised as a centre of excellence. But on this day, and throughout the first half of the programme - what are we learning? Well one thing which is hugely disappointing, is that in too many instances, people are still experiencing bad #attitudes and #behaviours in the workplace and from those in #leadership positions. This causes so much stress, anxiety and adversely affects performance at work, as well as negatively impacting people's wellbeing and home life. We talk and hear much, about #culture in organisations (and from our speakers too), but culture and organisations are 'things' - and it's people who form organisations, and who are responsible for the culture, attitudes and behaviours which prevail. Have the #courage to call bad behaviours to account. #Lead by example. How hard is it to act and lead with empathy, kindness and encouragement? Our discussions and learning continues, with us all holding up the mirror on our own attitudes, behaviours and leadership practice. But our team are hugely encouraged by the alumni of our programmes and their development progress, and that they are taking fresh thinking and better practice back in to the world of work.

What part can opera play in a conversation on #climate & #health for Louisville’s business community? #Arts can open hearts and minds. Open hearts and minds can change the world. 1) The arts are not merely entertainment, designed to make us feel good. Rather, arts exist to cause us to FEEL. And to THINK. 2) When we Feel and Think in community with others, we can be drawn out of our focus on self. We then redirect our focus on others — our neighbors — and develop empathy and compassion. 3) With compassion, we are called to stewardship of others and the world we share and are responsible for. Not because we’re told to (or fined if we don’t), but because it is the right thing to do. What an honor to participate in this important discussion moderated by Dr. Wayne Tuckson.
