What is Giving Season? Giving season refers to a time period, typically around the end of the year, when people engage in acts of {hashtag|\#|giving} and {hashtag|\#|generosity}. It is a time when individuals and {hashtag|\#|communities} come together to support and help those in need. Giving season often coincides with holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, which further emphasizes the spirit of giving. Giving season is not only about material contributions but also about spreading kindness and compassion to others. The concept of giving season is a time to reflect on our blessings and express gratitude by giving back to the community. The act of giving can create a positive ripple effect, inspiring others to also engage in acts of kindness. Join Building Impact in fighting against summer hunger for families in need by contributing to their Summer Food Drive. In Massachusetts, 36% of surveyed households with children reported that their child is food insecure. With summer break coming up for kids, many families who rely on school-provided breakfasts and lunches may be struggling to purchase food. 100% of all donations will go to their three partners: Action for Boston Community Development, Inc. (ABCD), Boston Medical Center (BMC)'s Preventative Food Pantry, and People Helping People, Inc. - Burlington MA to help deliver meals. 🤔 Did You Know? Food Insecurity in South Florida 🌽🍽️ South Florida is home to sun, surf, and vibrant communities. Yet, behind the scenes, there's a pressing issue we need to address. Did you know that South Florida's food insecurity rate stands at 12%? That's more than 500,000 individuals who don't know where their next meal will come from. The COVID-19 pandemic and its economic consequences have exacerbated this problem, pushing even more families into food insecurity. It's disheartening to see that households with children are among the hardest-hit, with a continuous rise in food insecurity, particularly in Black and Hispanic households. As we reflect on these challenges, Change Me Foundation is gearing up for a special Thanksgiving fundraiser. Our goal is ambitious, yet it's driven by the spirit of giving. We aim to provide full Publix dinners to 400 families in need this Thanksgiving. It's our way of spreading warmth, love, and hope during this holiday season. By joining hands with us, you're not just making a donation; you're ensuring that hundreds of families can come together around a table filled with gratitude. In our last post, we highlighted Thrive SC, but we realize there are many people just trying to survive, let alone thrive. According to Feeding America, more than 44 million people in the US face hunger today. Fortunately, there is something we can do to help! One of the ways we can support, is by supporting a local nonprofit that feeds those in need. Meals on Wheels prepares over 1,200 meals and hand delivers them daily to local residents. Wow, what a mission! How can we help? Meals on Wheels can always use volunteers! There is always a need for kitchen prep and delivery of the meals. If those aren't an option for you, donations- no matter the amount, will directly impact another human being in the form of nourishment. Food Drive Competition - By team, by floor, by department. Because of the ever-evolving supply chain, shelf-stable items are in high demand. Our donation door is open for extended hours during the holidays! (feedmore.org) Year-End Budget Surplus - Many companies have a use-it-or-lose-it approach. Have a little extra budget at year-end? Invest in the community through a special gift or purchase to help provide food to our community. Consider sponsoring one of our key programs. Mid-winter volunteering - We LOVE volunteers! Volunteers make up 2/3rds of the Feed More team. Consider signing up and locking in for January and February shifts now.

⭐ This week’s Spotlight shines a light on Janet McDonnell, an exceptional lead volunteer who has completed over 125 food rescues since May 2022. We are so grateful to have volunteers like Janet and couldn’t be more appreciative of her commitment to fighting food waste and food insecurity in our community.  SNEAK PEEK VFR: Janet, what initially interested you in volunteering with VFR? And what keeps you coming back to do more food rescues?   Janet: I saw a clip about VFR on the news and decided to sign up on the VFR app. I find the volunteering easy, it doesn’t take much time, and I’m saving good food from being thrown out and giving it to nearby nonprofits.   I find it deeply meaningful when I see the places where I drop off the food – whether it’s a seniors’ centre, a community fridge, or a women’s shelter.   I appreciate that I can use the VFR app to pick any food rescue I want, and it shows me exactly which nonprofit I will be delivering the food to.   Also, for most volunteering opportunities, volunteers are required to commit to a fixed schedule. I’m retired, and I travel a lot, so that doesn’t really suit me. 🌟 Nonprofit Spotlight 🌟 When I started working with Hope & Comfort back in May there was a lot I didn't know like: ❌ 30% of Massachusetts residents struggle with Hygiene Insecurity. (That's over 2 million people!) ❌ Federal programs don't cover basic hygiene products ❌ That 39% of youth reported avoiding school or after-school activities at least once because they didn't have access to hygiene products But I also learned that through Hope & Comfort's programs that: ✔ 87% of youth recipients reported that receiving hygiene products from Hope & Comfort improved their self-esteem ✔ 93% of recipients said that receiving hygiene products from Hope and Comfort improved their overall health ✔ Hope & Comfort distributed 3 million products to 500 partners across Massachusetts in 2023 alone. We have something really exciting cooking for October to bring even more awareness to this hidden crisis but in the meantime be sure to check them out.
