Got summer vacation plans? Here are a few tips to let your colleagues know you’ll be OOO. Every lawyer needs time to unplug. But between the deadlines on your matters and the expectations of your colleagues, it can be difficult to unplug. If you want to perform at your peak, you need to give your brain time to unwind and recharge. This usually requires more than a three-day weekend. 5 workdays and two weekends is a solid amount of time. Here are some tips on scheduling and protecting your vacation time. 🗓️ Plan far in advance. Plan your vacation several months in advance. Review your matters and plan your vacation during a time when the matters are likely to be in a lull. If you’re a litigator, you can look at your case calendar and plan accordingly. If you’re a corporate associate, there are usually times of the year when business is slower. ✉️ Email the partners on your matters with the dates of your vacation at least 2 months in advance. Let them know the dates of your vacation. Explain that you will arrange for another associate to cover your matters should anything come up. 🤝Arrange for other associates to cover your matters during your vacation. It helps if you’ve done this for them in the past. 🎀 Tie up loose ends before your vacation. 💬 Set your OOO auto-response. It’s a good practice to have a different message for internal and external senders. ⛔ Avoid the urge to respond to emails unless it’s urgent, i.e., matter implosion. But, if you’re going to fret too much and want to monitor your inbox for a few minutes a day for your peace of mind, then you do you. This last tip is the hardest one. I know I struggled with it. Sometimes things will crop up and you’ll have to handle them. That’s part of the job. But, for the most part, your colleagues will understand and respect your vacation time, knowing that you’ll come back rested and recharged. Is your firm not respecting your vacations? Email (npappas@laterallink.com) or DM me to discuss places that will let you recharge in peace. #lawyers #lawfirms #careers
