I've nearly stopped going to grocery stores, all thanks to Zepto and Blinkit.
Initially a convenience, this has now become my regular weekend routine.
This shift made me curious: how do these services manage such quick deliveries?
Here’s what I discovered 👇
✅ Dark Stores
Unlike traditional retail stores, Zepto and Blinkit operate from 'Dark Stores' — these are essentially mini-warehouses strategically hidden in urban areas and dedicated solely to processing online orders.
✅ Rapid Delivery
Each dark store services a small area, usually within a 2-3 km radius, ensuring that deliveries can be made swiftly, often within 15 minutes.
✅ Streamlined Order Processing
As soon as an order is placed, the picker receives an alert on their device, guiding them directly to the items.
An order typically has around six items and takes about 1.5 minutes to assemble and pack.
✅ Curated Inventory
They stock 2,000 to 4,000 SKUs specifically chosen for impulsive buys like milk, chocolates and the like.
These items make up nearly two-thirds of consumer purchases, focusing on items people frequently need right away.
This model capitalizes on the need for speed and convenience in today's fast-paced world.
As quick commerce reshapes our shopping experiences, what impact do you think this will have on traditional neighborhood stores?
Can speed and efficiency coexist with the charm of local shopping?
