There’s more to being Group Business Director than meetings and spreadsheets, as this snapshot of Kate McLeod’s day shows. ‘To be fair, they do form quite a large part of my role,’ Kate says, ‘but my job is really about working with colleagues and clients to get brilliant results that will have maximum impact for Tesco.’ She’ll hate us for saying this, but Kate really is the glue that holds the Tesco team together. Her to-do list covers everything from crunching the numbers for a meeting with our Finance Director Jane (‘Don’t tell her but I had to re-take maths at school!’ 😬) to coaching and mentoring. ‘In the video, I was running an account management forum about confidence – it’s something I’m passionate about as it’s so important for career development.’ But one of Kate’s greatest skills is the ability to build trust – of colleagues and clients. ‘I love the people I work with – from my Work WAGs, as I call them, to our clients, who really are the best!’ Kate’s also super-creative, as this self-shot video demonstrates. ‘People assume account management is purely focused on the business side of things, but it’s our job to interrogate ideas from a commercial perspective. You can’t be in this job and not be interested in content. And there’s a lot of creativity in pulling together a great PowerPoint presentation!’ So what’s the secret of being a brilliant Business Director? ‘You’re only as good as your relationships. The better you understand what makes your clients tick, what keeps them up at night, the more successfully you can steer and influence the work.’ Interested in a career in account management at Cedar? It's FRIDAY, and we're continuing our Staff Personal Profiles on the Park today with CIP Controller and walking/hiking trail afficionado Ashley Lawrence. (She's too fast to get a picture of in the spring, summer, and fall, apparently!) "I was born and raised in Cape Breton and got my first degree in Halifax. I did the tree plant every summer for eight years and would drive to Sudbury to plant north of here. So, Sudbury was a place to move to try something new when I decided to head west six or seven years ago to work a couple of years and do my next degree. My intention was to take it year by year in Sudbury, but I’ve settled in, and I plan to stay! Part of the reason for that is this great job. I’ve been at CIP since November 2021. I was still in school for accounting and serving at a restaurant when Felix (Lopes Jr.) came in one day. As it turned out, CIP was growing fast and needed a controller, and I was offered the position. I fell in love with it. There are a lot of different things to do during the day. I love the data collection – organizing the numbers so they make sense, and then using the data to tell a story that I can present to Adam (Lachapelle, CIP VP). It’s not just accounting work – as a controller, I get to be part of the conversations about what the numbers say and what they mean from a management and planning standpoint. Adam is a great manager to work for, Felix is inspired, the people are great, and although I am out at an industrial park, I’m in a modern, clean, comfortable office in a beautiful setting working for a company that respects and encourages work/life balance. And the amenities are great! I love bringing my three dogs out to the park to use the trails all year round. That’s my favourite – we’re here every weekend. There's primary care through MagnaMed North, access to mechanics to have your vehicle serviced. It goes on and on. Every employee is respected and treated as a whole person. That pays off ten-fold. When you work with visionaries, you never know what the day is going to hold. A great new idea may spring forth, and I get to be involved in running the numbers and having the strategy discussions that might make it reality. Can we pull it off? Does it make sense? It’s very exciting to be part of the process and provide information that helps generate data-informed decisions about the future directions the company could take. Which are the best projects to take on? What are the pros and cons? CIP is growing, and I anticipate that my job will expand in terms of quantity and quality. There is a huge opportunity to learn so much more! I love a new challenge, or as is usually the case, many exciting new challenges. The future at CIP looks very bright."
