A lot of engineers weirdly believe that if they grind their way to 1,000 LeetCode problems, a Google hiring manager magically shows up at their door with a freshly printed offer letter. They'll spend months doing data structures and algorithms (DSA) problems, putting their numbers on LinkedIn and on their resume while not having a single Big Tech interview lined up. Here's the harsh reality: DSA is only helpful during the interview. It doesn't help you get the interview, and it's even more useless after you get the job. In this market, it makes even less sense to dedicate yourself so strongly to DSA as companies like Google are largely not hiring and doing layoffs instead to look cool to shareholders. Just lazily breaking out LeetCode is now the worst possible interview prep strategy you can have. This market requires you to be more dynamic. This economy is terrible, but I've been able to mentor several engineers to job offers over the past couple months, often times with minimal DSA. Google laid off 12000+ jobs in 2023 alone, more than 6% of its workforce. This wasn't due to financial losses; in fact, the company still managed to generate a substantial profit of $60 billion, albeit 21% less than the previous year. This phenomenon is not unique to #Google and is observed in various other major corporations. Still working with them is a lifetime goal for many. And it's highly unlikely that anyone, upon receiving a job offer from them, would turn it down. This got us wondering, what is it that makes these companies so aspirational! It's not job security for sure. Among many things, what stood out for us is the incredible #BrandRecognition that these companies have diligently cultivated and thus enjoy. (1/2) Last night was the longest night in my entire life. I worked from home yesterday and I cooked a big dinner with my girlfriend, and watched the reality show on TV after that. I told my girlfriend I need to prepare for the interview tonight -- as an interviewer, for the first time in my two years at #Google. That's right, Google has paused hiring for quite a while after I joined and finished the three-hour long interview training. Back in the days, we even need to sign up for the in-person training sessions to be able to graduate. I waited for another half a year to conduct my first shadow interview, #Googlers are required to take at least one shadow interview to go through the whole hiring process, then speak to the official interviewer to get their interview knowledge aligned, to be finally qualified as an interviewer. And that was almost one year ago. I was hyped and a bit upset before the interview because I almost forgot how to solve an algorithm problem, nor how to gave just feedback to the candidate. Because I am responsible for not only this open role, but also someone's entire career. So I need to prepare it well, too. I went downstairs and opened up my laptop. That was 21:00. I got a weird email saying 'You Cloudtop StopInstance operation has begun' and I suddenly recalled I just had the cloudtop maintenance a few days back, it couldn't be a scheduled task, there is definitely something bad happening. I even 'Momaed' (Google's internal search engine) "what stopinstance means" and I did get the results from the website, so I chose not to believe I was leaving the company. Thus I had the longest five minutes in my life, witnessing how I lost corp access one website by another, with a forced laptop reboot, then finally, an email saying "Notice regarding your employment".
