Didn't see the news over the weekend (I tend to avoid the news whenever possible) so have only just seen the news about the tornado in Ireland. Thankfully nobody was hurt but there was some damage to buildings and vehicles. I remember there was a tornado a short while ago on the Isle of Wight - this got me thinking "Are tornados becoming more common in the region?". Did you know that the UK has more tornadoes per year / 10,000km2 than the US? The UK has a tornado density of 2.3 whereas the US has 1.3 - now, the ones in the US are far bigger and if you pick an area like Kansas the density is as high as 11.2 per year per 10,000km2. We actually have ~30 tornadoes per year in the UK, but it could be higher. The reporting of tornadoes needs to be by eye as satellites tend not to capture them. This article from Manchester University is full of interesting Tornado insights: https://lnkd.in/edMi4X4D Whilst there's been a number of studies, with some ongoing, it looks like we don't actually know what causes tornadoes, but climate change scientists believe that our warming milder climate is likely to increase the number we have. There's also a belief that they'll start to appear more in clusters . Is it time for us to start looking at the way we design, build and maintain our buildings and infrastructure so that we're prepared for our future weather state? #DensDeck #FlatRoofing #BuildGP #Tornado #resilience https://lnkd.in/eQZ8YT4m

1st Warmest, 6th Wettest, 11th Dullest - Spring 2024. Climate #Myths need busting? Future #Expectations need re-setting? This super simple graphic illustrates what we've been experiencing. Bonuses have been reduced hay fever and amazing growth of some plants. But.... the weather has been so wet even the government has had to make significant accommodations for farmers, and that's a big worry. https://lnkd.in/eKcMymqt #TooWetToWork
Many people in the UK will struggle to comprehend that the dull, endlessly wet spring we've had has been the warmest on record - a reminder that a warming world is not (contrary to tabloid front pages) necessarily a pathway to blue skies, sun, ice creams and beach holidays via Dan Harris @roostweather on X https://lnkd.in/ejMiprn4
