Let me share a story inspired by true events. Two friends, Ram and Dixon, started their corporate careers together. Ram was a hardworking, ideal candidate who never job hopped and managed to climb the ladder to become a Senior Director in 15 years. Dixon, on the other hand, was vibrant, dynamic, and highly result-oriented, not an ideal candidate but very sharp and innovative. Surprisingly, Dixon managed to reach the Senior Director post in just 7.5 years. Now, both are contesting for the CEO position, and their skill sets and accolades are almost similar. Early in my career, working as an assistant marketing manager for a fortune 500 pharma company, I experienced something which shocked me at the time but years later would prove to be a life-changing lesson. As an ambitious woman entering the workforce, my mission was to move up the corporate ladder quickly. My game plan? Get promoted, and fast. That was my golden ticket to proving I'd made it. So, when a coveted manager's spot opened, I was already mentally redecorating the office. I was sure I would get the spot. I received a great review, worked long hours and was a team player. I had also been with the company 6 months longer than the 3 people at my level who were eligible. I thought I was a shoe in. The position stayed open for longer than anyone expected so I started to get anxious and went to my boss and asked, “do you think I will get the promotion. Her reply stunned me -- “I don’t know she said, did you ask for it?” I looked at her like she had 2 heads. I felt totally dejected. Of course, I wanted it. How could anyone possibly not know what I wanted?    I walked away from that conversation feeling like I'd been sucker-punched. How could she not see my ambition? It felt like a betrayal. But here's the kicker: years down the line, that slap of reality turned into the best advice I ever got. Ask for what you want.    It's so simple, yet we often forget to do it. Sometimes it’s out of fear of failure or anxiety about seeming greedy or ungrateful and not being a team player. Often we wait it out and think we will get it when the “time is right” . That’s unlikely too. No on wakes up in the morning saying I think I'll give Ellen more money today.   It took me many years but I started to learn to ask. Whether it was for more money, more influence or more of something that was important to me. No fear, no guilt. I learned to negotiate for myself. It's really easy to do for other people but not always for ourselves. I learned a lot since that missed managers promotion and that’s why I wanted to share those lessons by offering a quick method to Negotiate for Yourself creating a Win/Win. It’s Friyeay, good people of the internet! And you know what that means: WINners' successes! Today, I have two stories with you that were shared last night on our Grads call. I hope you will find them as inspirational as I do! First one was from a WIN Grad who shared her joy in the 6-month secondment she had secured within her company in a different country. She absolutely loves her new team, she loves the work, she is doing much more interesting work - and a 32% pay rise to boot! What I celebrated with her and the other WINners, was not just these - objectively speaking awesome - results. What I just LOVE about this, is that she has conceived of this idea completely herself and then took the WIN steps to make it happen. What do we learn from this? You have agency. You can shape your life and your career. Don’t wait for others to do this for you. Go you, WINner! And another story that was shared last night - amongst many others! - came from a lady who has taken my rule that you should spend approx. 10% of your work time on sharing what you are capable of and what you have done with your colleagues, so that they can leverage that, to new heights. She calculated she has probably spent about 20% of her time increasing her visibility in her company, through thought leadership pieces, speaking and attending events etc. Yeay her! And yeay company. Because, team, le me tell you what one of the outcomes of all that work was - that the mother of all EVPs realised that she is perfect to do a very high profile redesign of the entire team. If that EVP hadn’t known she is capable of doing that, they would have missed out on her magic. So what is our second lesson of today? It is that you need to share what you’re capable of, and that doing that is great for everyone! Love, love, love when WINners realise their agency, realise they need to take control of their careers, do it and then enjoy the sweet, sweet results of those strategies!
