Lessons in Leadership
I was left searching for the positives after missing one of my flights this week.
Blaming Kasha Ströh for our chance catch-up; or the steadfast airline staff for their unwillingness to make concessions for me, crossed my mind but wouldn’t be fair.
I was thoroughly enjoying our catch-up; and
They’re just doing their job - a frenetic, fast-pace, high-pressure environment - dealing with excited, anxious, entitled travellers.
I only had myself to blame.
Standing at the check-in (again), after being waitlisted, I found myself with some time to kill.
An article on the front page of the local press caught my eye. Our Siya Kolisi, ‘Captain Fantastic’, has been included in the TIME Magazine 100 most influential people of 2024. A befitting honour.
Reflecting on leadership, in the moment, Thabang from FlySafair swept in. A gentleman - kind, patient and helpful.
As disappointed as I was with myself Thabang reminded me - we all human, we all make mistakes. And really the consequences of this one, negligible. Be kind to myself.
Thabang and his team sent me off on the next available flight. Leading from the front, on-the-ground. An exemplary representative of FlySafair.
LESSON #1
Being kind to others is natural for me, being kind to myself, less so.
LESSON #2
Leadership isn’t exclusive to Presidents, CEOs, Principals and Team Captains. We all have the capacity and opportunities to lead, regardless of titles.
Have a happy weekend 🤗
*Shout-out to the team from The Capital Hotels, Apartments & Resorts Mirage, Cape Town. My stay at the hotel was an exceptional experience. Nomfundi and the team, there as well, leading from the front.

3wSo sorry I had to miss. Bill Kearney is one of my favorites of the STP (same thirty people) 😉 and a great friend to me and many others. #STPVC
