8 years ago, I rode my 150cc motorcycle from Singapore through Malaysia to Hat Yai. I've been engaging in "risky behaviour" like this for over a decade now And these are the 4 ways I've learnt to manage risk. 1. AVOID Change your plan/route/itinerary to remove the risk 2. CONTROL Take steps to mitigate or reduce the impact of the risk 3. ACCEPT Just accept it. Some risks can’t be mitigated or avoided in a meaningful way 4. TRANSFER Pay a reputable vendor to manage and take responsibility I won’t go into the details of each because I want to focus on two points. Firstly, there are alternatives to simply avoiding the risk. However, when it comes to managing risks, the go-to option for many people is to avoid. But if we were to avoid all risks, we’d have to live in a bubble with a controlled atmosphere. The second point can be difficult to accept. It’s the fact that you sometimes accept risks, not because you’re engaging in risky behaviour, but because there is no meaningful way that you can avoid or mitigate the impact of the risk. I am thrilled to recount my recent involvement in a highly enriching event hosted by the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei, in collaboration with Malaysia Productivity Corporation The exquisite scenery of the Shangri-La hotel, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, added a perfect backdrop of inspiration to our profound discussions about combating corruption and bolstering risk management strategies. One of the standout moments was the incredible privilege of engaging with Datuk Karunanithy, Director of Sabah for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Our dialogue revolved around the challenges of corruption and the vital initiatives needed to establish a resilient defense mechanism aligned with MACC Act 17A, specifically tailored for the private sectors. I took immense pride in leading an engaging workshop as part of the ABAC Center of Excellence Limited (ABAC), where I had the distinct honor of interacting with fellow UNGC members who share the same fervor for eradicating corruption within their respective organizations. Through the workshop, we delved into empowering Anti-Corruption Management Systems from a governance perspective, shedding light on strategic approaches that can empower us to fortify our organizational integrity. The workshop served as a transformative platform, fostering meaningful exchanges of ideas, best practices, and collaborative brainstorming to address the complex challenges posed by corruption. The commitment and enthusiasm shown by fellow attendees were truly infectious, reaffirming our shared dedication to cultivating transparent, accountable, and sustainable business practices. Really privileged to have been able to attend the PETRONAS Compliance Conference 2023 with my fellow partners Camilla de Silva and Mohammed Reza. Kuala Lumpur is bustling with energy as usual, and it was really heartening to hear about the steps being taken by a global MNC like Petronas to place compliance at the forefront of everything it does. I was especially encouraged to hear about the steps being taken by each of its group entities (some of which operate in really challenging jurisdictions) to address, mitigate and minimise each of its five critical legal areas. My two key takeaways from the thought-provoking panel discussions? 1. While the tone from the top is very important, organisations should place an equal emphasis on the murmurs from the ground in building up a robust compliance culture. 2. We had an excellent global team meeting on AIMS -ISO 42001 today and high points were:1.Excellent participation by the US,UK,UAE, Malaysia team and their Govt is equally serious 2.Lead Auditor course by TNV and CCS already started under Exemplar Global Inc 3.CB status is not yet clear As needs clear guidance 4.Awareness and training to be expedited in the teams of interested parties 5.Sharing the training, consultancy, auditor teams to help and support clients with respect to:Overall Cost optimisation,Visa complexity,hotel and travel cost, Culture and language issue,translator issue 6.Ajay and team have a few hundred resources available globally at the shortest possible notice with the practical cost sharing based on energy and efforts.7.A risk based approach will take the lead in this standard with Data quality,SOA,Governing body.
