Before becoming a trust, British waterways came under Defra. Did you know that British Waterways, once a key organisation in managing the UK's waterways, was part of DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) before its transition in 2012? This pivotal change led to the formation of the Canal & River Trust in England and Wales, a charitable organisation dedicated to the sustainable management of our waterways. In Scotland, British Waterways continues its important work under the name Scottish Canals, remaining a public corporation under the Scottish Government's stewardship.
