Unpopular opinion: having a career in Human Resources (HR) is one of the best you can have. Working in HR gives you an insight into how organisations work like no other. 8 years ago I took one of many ‘plunges’ in my career and accepted a role in HR. In this role I had the opportunity to help employees work through conflict, build programs that decreased turnover, and learn from some of the best HR leaders I have ever met! I once had a senior non-HR executive tell me that you can define an organization by their investment and commitment to growing and developing their people. This resonated deeply with me and has guided my approach to HR and Learning & Development throughout my career. However, I've also experienced the other side of the spectrum. I had a senior HR executive that pushed back on expanding our L&D efforts, resulting in drastic cuts to both the HR and L&D budgets. This decision not only impacted our ability to support employee growth but also reflected a broader organizational misalignment with the value of investing in our people. These contrasting experiences have underscored the critical importance of prioritizing employee development. “Oooo you work in HR, the evil people” … (obvs they said it in a cheeky way) but my immediate response was I really am nice and I do great things - well I try to lol! It made me think about the reputation Human Resources has. Apparently we don’t really care We only work for the business There’s no real support for employees In all honesty it is quite sad, when you have someone in front of you that probably had a poor experience, and their lasting impression is HR are evil. I want to change this, we’re not mean. We want what’s best for the organisation, we want our employees to flourish, to have an environment that helps them grow, that empowers and enables them to do their best. We want to create an environment where employees feel safe and feel a sense of belonging. Unfortunately HR can’t do this alone. We need strong leaders working alongside HR to really help bring the org forward and be the best we can be. Hopefully throughout my career however long that may be; I can make a difference and maybe one day; I’ll hear positive things about HR ☺️ #humanresources #HR
