I am thrilled to announce Caleb Tinajero and my first place achievement in professor Farooq’s Fourth Year Urban Studio Competition for our Pakistani project “Orangi Eco-Weavings”. It has been a great semester that has taught me a lot of valuable skills that I am excited to take into my thesis next year!

The KRVIA postgraduate program addresses urban complexity through research focused on three main questions: the relationship between urban form and socio-economic productivity, the interplay of informality and everyday urbanism, and the connection between informality and ecology. These questions are explored in six areas: housing, environment/ecology & landscape, planning & policy, history/heritage & sacred, urban experience & phenomena, and infrastructure & amenities. Interdisciplinary approaches dissolve boundaries between disciplines, fostering productive dialogues among architecture, planning, sustainability, sociology, and economics, ultimately enhancing skill sets, methodologies, and holistic knowledge for urban practice.
The theme for the next three-year cycle (2024-2027), is "Localizing SDGs". It attempts to regionalize the sustainable development goals in the development as well as sustenance of the history and heritage of our cities.

The Journal of Biourbanism (JBU) is a biannual peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary, international online journal. The journal takes an incisive look into the bios/life of urbanism through perspectives in architecture, planning, environmental studies, and other social sciences. The journal aims to critically review and define the notions of biourbanism. Assessing human-centered or need- based design sensibilities is a predominant concern, while attempting to address the disconnect between theory and practice in participating disciplines. The journal publishes cutting-edge research, methodologies, and innovative design approaches on biourbanism.

Next week together with Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) and Home.Earth, we at EFFEKT will host a digital launch of the 'Doughnut for Urban Development - A Manual.'
In addition to discussing the key learnings from the book we will present additional resources behind the book that can support the process of operationalizing the concepts in the book. The tools include:
✨ An Appendix - the scientific basis behind the book
✨ A Database - in-depth resources and references behind the 96 impact areas defined within the book
✨ A LCA Biodiversity tool - which makes it possible to calculate the direct (on-site) and indirect (off-site) biodiversity impacts of buildings projects.
✨ A toolkit - Workshop materials created to help organizations dive deep into Doughnut mindset and operationalize the targets set within the book.

Simple Connections, Profound Impacts in Urban Projects🌍
At Huasipichanga, we understand that the smallest details can forge the strongest bonds in urban planning. Today, we reflect on a valuable lesson from the 2017 Canoa Externalization Workshop, a key event within the Latin American Social Workshop organized by the Latin American Coordinator of Architecture Students.
🏗️ In 2017, our team was chosen to play a crucial role in the PRE-TSL participatory practices, facilitating effective integration between the residents of Canoa and the workshop participants (architecture students), aimed at rebuilding communities devastated by the 2016 earthquake in Ecuador. Our efforts focused on:
1. Engaging residents from the early stages of the project.
2. Empowering children as agents of change and network builders.
3. Highlighting the transformative impact of effective participatory practices.
We worked with children in workshops that combined art therapy and psychological support, responding to the aftermath of the earthquake. In one of these workshops, children decorated fabric bags expressing their hopes for the future of Canoa. These bags, filled with wishes and drawings, were handed to each participant, demonstrating how a simple object can become a lasting bridge of communication between architects and space users.
🤔 What simple element would you integrate into your project to create a similar impact? Share your ideas!

As vertically-integrated developments become part of the urban fabric, how do people interact in such dense spaces?
A recently-published paper by Future Cities Laboratory (#FCL) Global researchers Dr Srilalitha Gopalakrishnan (Dr), Anjanaa Devi Srikanth, Prof. Dr Thomas Schroepfer and their research team examined the integrated housing development Kampung Admiralty to forecast movement flows, #accessibility, and #connectivity.
Their study highlights the importance of spatial design parameters and key connectors to social and spatial effectiveness, giving potential for its use in the design of future sites.

One of the great challenges with sustainable development is finding the right balance of growth to support human flourishing whilst respecting planetary boundaries. Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economics is about the best model I’ve found for conceptualising this sweet spot. So I was very interested to come across this toolkit on ‘The Doughnut for Urban Development’. The tool contains useful guidance and resources to assess the impacts of urban development projects within social and planetary boundaries.
A great resource for anyone who wants to get their head around Doughnut Economics in the context of urban development. Check it out:
