Imagine how insanely productive, engaged, inspired, innovative, and GREAT we’d all be if we truly could be ourselves. 🌈✨ Given that it’s Pride Month 🏳️🌈, there's no one better to talk about this topic than the incredible Jackiee W., a Board Member of OUTbio San Diego. Yesterday, we had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. Theresa Haskins for her webinar, "(Neuro)Diversity Includes You", in honor of this week and Women’s History Month. During the session, we gained valuable insights into how neurodivergent thinking and universal design contribute to innovation, higher-performing teams, and thriving organizations. From the desk of Dr. Gerilyn Davis: Happy Monday! I hope you are having a wonderful start to your week. It is pretty cool to think that we will be experiencing an eclipse today. It is astounding to witness the power of coming together just like people. The gift of having a strength-based approach to inclusion is that there is joy on the journey as we work together. Here is a real-life example of strength-based inclusion. ---- Someone has Connection strength, another person has Strategy, and another has Individualization. ---- Connection sets the tone for us all to come together in the first place. ---- Strategy extracts our dialogue for a direction forward based on our connections. ---- Individualization iterates the strengths accessible to orchestrate the strategic plan. In this instance, we THRIVE together and off of each other. We create the building blocks for our success. It is thrilling to witness in motion! 💡 Seeking Insights: What does being met "halfway" mean to you? As part of the neuroinclusion workshop yesterday, the group identified the idea of being met halfway or it’s a 50:50 thing as being an important aspect of a neuroinclusive culture. So what does this really look like in practice? An example from this group was both being able to talk about their neurodivergence in a safe way, and also to be asked about, so as not to have to offer it up. I'm curious to learn from your experiences. ❓Have you ever felt the weight of your voice being silenced❓ I can vividly recall a moment where this happened to me… I was a couple weeks into my new job, and they asked me to submit a bio. I provided the usual details... Where I’m from; My areas of specialty; and What I like to do in my spare time. There was one thing I made sure to include… ✊🏽 I’m a social justice advocate at heart. If folks remembered anything from that short bio, I wanted it to be that. So imagine my surprise when I opened up the new employee newsletter and that line was missing. 😨😕🤔 I felt a whole lotta shock, a little confused, and a bit betrayed. I knew then that this feeling wasn’t mine alone. Many folks in marginalized communities have their voices erased in subtle + covert ways that shock us into deeper silence. 👉🏽 It happens in school settings.  👉🏽 In the workplace.  👉🏽 And in the many systems we interact with on a daily basis. A part of my mission as a human-centered and equity-focused data consultant is to uplift the voices that have been historically excluded. I collaborate with social justice leaders to create meaningful connections with the communities they serve. As a result they’re able to: 1️⃣ Embed the voices of their community within the fabric of their organization, fostering inclusion + collaboration.  2️⃣ Ensure their services meet the needs of those they serve, building strategic alignment.  3️⃣ Expand and diversify their impact, leading to lasting change. As Neurodiversity Celebration Week gets underway, remember: Your productivity is not your worth. Among the empowering messages this week, you will find companies focused solely on neurodivergent people’s efficiency. Without acknowledging challenges, whether environmental or individual. Without discussing accommodations, adjustments, or accessibility. The amazing variety of thinking and learning styles (including “typical”) that comes from neurodiversity IS good for innovation. Sometimes we ARE more efficient (when properly supported). But neurodivergent people don’t need to make superhuman efforts to be good employees. We have a range of abilities, interests, and needs when it comes to work. Just like everyone else. Let me repeat: Neurodivergent people should not have to be exceptional to be employable. We should not need to be superheroes. No capes, just capabilities.* PS - I woke up this morning to find Jim Hoerricks, PhD and Charli Clement have both called out this same phenomenon.
