Did you know that Black women are three times more likely to die from complications of pregnancy or childbirth than White women? Black Maternal Health Week is a time to raise awareness about the disparities in maternal health outcomes experienced by Black women in our community and across our country. April 11-17 marks the 7th annual Black Maternal Health Week. In 2021, the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women was 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births. In the U.S., Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy related cause then White women. Additionally, the CDC notes that more than 80% of pregnancy related deaths are preventable. AdventHealth for Women is taking action by piloting a postpartum program for Black moms with hypertension to provide the care and support they need to thrive. Maternal Mental Health Month is an important moment to call attention to the challenges mothers around the world face before and after pregnancy. At least one in five women experiences mental health concerns during pregnancy and after childbirth, but most go untreated. Black women face a higher chance of developing perinatal mood disorders compared to white women. And, they're less likely to receive treatment, in part due to stigma and fear of being judged unfit. One of your girlfriends, sisters, or cousins could be suffering without you ever knowing. We must continue to break the stigma in order to drive better outcomes for mothers. This year for #BlackMaternalHealthWeek, I find myself reflecting on the shocking and unacceptable statistic that Black women are still three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts. And in Philadelphia, Black mothers are twice as likely as white women to die within one year of childbirth. We need to work together immediately to eliminate these disparities to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all. "Hundreds of women in the U.S. die each year from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth—a crisis exacerbated by COVID-19. The Department of Health and Human Services is working to address the crisis and meet long-term goals such as increasing women's access to high-quality maternal care. As of September 2023, HHS hasn't determined how it'll measure progress toward achieving its maternal health goals. Following key performance measurement practices—such as setting near-term goals and establishing timeframes for results—would allow the agency to better understand if its efforts are effective. Today is International Patient Safety Day – a reminder that we need to work together to ensure the safe delivery of maternal and infant care throughout the healthcare experience. Black women especially face the worst outcomes from pregnancy and childbirth, so we must recognize and remedy implicit bias.
