MEMBERS NEWS I Congratulations to Our Members Engie and Carmeuse on Being Selected by the EU’s Innovation Fund for their Columbus project Congratulations to our members, ENGIE and Carmeuse, and the project Columbus they are part of, which was selected among the 13 “Industry Electrification and Hydrogen” projects by the European Union's Innovation Fund. The project Columbus concentrates CO₂ from an innovative type of lime kiln and combines it with green hydrogen to produce synthetic methane, a renewable gas that can be injected into the gas grid or used in the transport and industry sectors. The green hydrogen will be produced by a 100 MW electrolysis unit, powered by renewable electricity. This project is a great example of how CCU can contribute to the reduction of emissions in hard-to-abate industries in Europe and worldwide. ENGIE is a European market leader in the generation and sales of electricity, natural gas, and energy services. The company has chosen the path of a carbon-neutral transition, offering innovative solutions to its residential, professional, and industrial customers for more economical and rational use of energy. Carmeuse is a global manufacturer of lime, limestone, and mineral-based products founded in 1860. Its products are used in a variety of industrial and construction applications. Carmeuse has long been concerned with its greenhouse gas emissions and actively aims to develop new technologies to reduce, capture, and reuse CO₂ emissions. #Biomethane is one of the main renewable gases of the future, already 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐬𝐞 as an alternative to fossil gas for the 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐔 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦. For this reason, biomethane production in Europe is expected to reach 𝟑𝟓 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐮𝐛𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐛𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟑𝟎, with an estimated investment of €37 billion. Given its relevance, training and awareness-raising on the subject are crucial. That is precisely why in this video the European Commission reminds us how biomethane is produced and what its extraordinary advantages are: https://bit.ly/3tM0y4G

Super proud to have been part of the BCG team led by Mads Peter Langhorn that recently worked with the Danish scale-up BioCirc. We leveraged the PtX project Optimizer (a BCG X product) to help them accelerate the prefeasibility phase and optimize their project, and it's been incredible to see the progress they’ve made. In just a few years, BioCirc has become one of the world's largest biomethane producers with its unique integrated energy cluster concept, combining solar, wind, biogas, electrolysis, pyrolysis, and Power-to-X solutions into a circular energy system for local communities. Africa lags in renewable energy deployment. In 2018, only 20 percent of Africa's electricity came from renewable sources, and in 2019, only two percent of new global energy capacity was added in Africa. Yet, forecasts suggest Africa could double its energy demand by 2040. I remain optimistic that SDG 7—access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for all—can be achieved on our continent by 2030. We have the know-how and technology and should take inspiration from BioCirc’s work to make this a reality. How do you think we can help make Africa a green continent? 📺 Watch Mads Peter Langhorn talk to BioCirc’s founder and CEO Bertel Maigaard in our new video: https://lnkd.in/eS7majkM and share your thoughts in the comments below. #RenewableEnergy #SustainableDevelopment #AfricaEnergy #GreenTech

The European Commission's #repowereu identifies Biomethane as a renewable lever for Europe's decarbonization and security of supply, while leveraging the existing gas infrastructure. Biomethane stands as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels and, in our perspective, here to revolutionize the way we think about energy sources. It not only leverages the existing gas infrastructure but also facilitates efficient integration of renewable energy sources across a range of sectors, including transportation and industry. Sectors that would otherwise be dependent on fossil gas. European Union's commitment to clean energy has never been stronger, and biomethane plays a pivotal role in achieving these objectives. At Green2x, we are happy to participate in the decarbonization of not only the hard-to-abate sectors with biomethane but also enabling the production of e-fuels with Arcadia eFuels. Scaling up osmotic energy 🌊 ⚡ French company Sweetch Energy has secured €25 million to accelerate the commercial development of an osmotic energy system. Generated by the difference in salinity when freshwater and seawater sources meet, osmotic energy could be huge. Estimates suggest almost 30,000 TWh of "natural osmotic energy" are released by deltas and estuaries around the world. The company's INOD solution uses “nano-scale membranes specifically designed for harnessing osmotic energy”. Launched in 2015, to date Sweetch Energy has secured €40 million. This also includes a €2.5 million grant from the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) to carry out further research. Can it be scaled up? A partnership is in place with energy company CNR (Compagnie Nationale du Rhône) to develop OsmoRhône 1 - this will certainly be seen as the proving ground for large-scale osmotic power.
