Consulting Lessons from the Sea I took this video somewhere in between Norway and Scottland in the North Sea when I was in the US Navy. That day we had ~100mph winds and 30-40ft seas. I was on a 600ft warship operated by the best in the world, so I always rested easy and had a good time going out to take a look at the waves. Sometimes at sea things would break and we were all trained to know how to fix them. Despite all of our expertise, every time we pulled into a port, we would always bring aboard a local pilot to navigate the ship into the harbor and up to the pier. From time to time, after long operational periods, we would put the ship in drydock for an overhaul by uniquely skilled ship workers. Despite the obvious skill and experience of our crew, it was always a good idea to bring someone aboard who had specialized expertise to navigate the most complex and nuanced situations and at other times to make sure the ship was in the best shape it could be to execute our next mission. In consulting I try to remember that my job is to help steer the “ship” for a short period through some tight spaces and make sure it’s structurally sound to execute the missions ahead.  My clients are always some of the best in the world and are the ones battling waves every day on the open seas, doing whatever needs to be done to execute under any conditions. Embracing Change and Building Resilience: Our Journey in a Fifth Wheel Camper 🚐🌟 During my last year in the army, my wife and I made the bold decision to purchase the largest fifth wheel camper we could afford. We chose to live in it, not only to facilitate our transition out of the military but also to embark on a journey that would take us to new places and create lasting memories. 🌍💕 That final year was incredibly hectic, with all the complexities of leaving the military compounded by the birth of our first child. 👶🍼 But it was also a life-changing experience. The day I signed out on terminal leave from the army at Fort Sill, we hit the road, ready for an adventure. 🚀 Our travels took us as far south as Key West, through the beautiful Smoky Mountains, and all the way to Seattle. 🗺️🏞️🌴 Along the way, we faced numerous hiccups—some minor, others more significant—but each one added to our resilience and our ability to adapt to new situations. 💪 Every challenge became a story, and every story enriched our journey. These experiences taught us the value of flexibility, perseverance, and embracing the unknown. 🌟 As I reflect on this chapter of our lives, I'm reminded of the importance of stepping out of our comfort zones and facing new challenges head-on. The skills and lessons we learned on the road continue to influence my approach to both personal and professional life. Parq at Camino (417 units) marks the initiation of three projects within the supply-constrained Craig Road corridor of North Las Vegas. Morgan Stonehill identified a supply void exacerbated by the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). Additionally, the limited availability of multifamily suitable land, influenced by the Nellis Airforce Base (15,000 employees) land use in airport environs, created a supply island that MS successfully identified and controlled. North Las Vegas is rapidly emerging as a leader in Logistics & Advanced manufacturing/research, leading to outsized demand tailwinds as employers and employees relocate to the region. Great news from the recent Australasian Marine Pilots Institute (AMPI) Conference held in Perth this week, for which we were one of many great sponsors. Not one, but two Port Hedland Pilots, Captain Craig Eastaugh and Captain Shaun Boot, were presented with Fellowship Awards for their remarkable contributions to both the Institute and the Australia Pilotage Industry. These awards recognise their dedication to Continual Professional Development (CPD) and Alternative Pathways with the AMPI Pilot Training Advisory Board (PTAB), as well as their invaluable service as Directors of the AMPI Board. While Craig was present to receive his award, Shaun's award was accepted by our company secretary, Captain Marco Blanco. Both Marco and Craig strongly believe that the 5 day conference, which focused on Maximizing Situational Awareness, has played a crucial role in refocusing the Australian Shipping Industry's attention on the significance of the Tacit Knowledge and Expertise of Marine Pilots. They also emphasised the importance placed on the passing of this relevant experience to future generations, in a planned and considered way, in a rapidly changing landscape. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more highlights from the conference. However, for now, we extend our heartfelt congratulations once again to Shaun and Craig for their tireless efforts in improving the Australian Pilotage Industry.
