Have you heard of Festooning? It’s a Dani Wallace phrase (www.thebigfestoon.co.uk/) ! In this tricky industry we are navigating, it’s good to link arms, inspire, encourage, support and learn from others. 💭 Reflections from Glastonbury I took a step away from my usual job to dive into the vibrant and chaotic world of Glastonbury, Europe's biggest festival, welcoming over 200,000 attendees. This experience is always special to me – it's a time to be present, to focus on the now, and to be part of a massive team effort that makes this incredible event happen. The atmosphere at Glastonbury is electric, and being part of this big machine is exhilarating. It's a chance to bring teams together, to implement lessons from previous years, and to elevate our performance. Every shift, every interaction, every step (and there were a lot of them – I averaged 38,000 steps a day!) counts towards creating an unforgettable experience for the festival-goers. Of course, not everything was smooth sailing. Dealing with challenging individuals reminded me of the importance of empathy and effective communication. Sometimes, it feels like people haven't heard the saying, "you catch more bees with honey." It's key to approach teamwork as a partnership and focus on collaboration rather than pointing out flaws. Transparency and honesty about motives when asking for help can make a huge difference. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to the overall customer experience, especially when thousands are pouring through the gates. It's about bringing people along on the journey with you, overcommunicating, and motivating them to go the extra mile. A key takeaway: never talk down to people – whether they're punters or colleagues. It doesn't make you a hero; in fact, it does quite the opposite. Sometimes, amidst the whirlwind, it's essential to take a step back, breathe, and centre yourself to plan the best course of action. It has taken me a week to recover, but I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. I can’t wait to do it all over again next year! Last night I saw Little River Band at one of the coolest venue anywhere. It's called Humphrey's On The Bay in San Diego. Few thoughts that make "gathering" here pretty incredible. 1. Every person who works there is friendly, welcoming and inviting. It's as if they are happy for YOU. Also interesting that it's mostly more senior people as ushers. They seem GRATEFUL to be there and you feel that energy immediately. 2. The environment itself is beautiful. To the left of the stage is the marina and lots of boats. So it's a place people WANT to be. It's just cool. 3. It's not too big or too small so there is a good amount of people. There is real feeling of community at this venue that just FEELS different than other venues. There isn't a bad seat. 4. Take those things above and add MUSIC and there is something profoundly special about the experience there. So, now think about your next offsite or team gathering. Is there a feeling of gratitude? Do your people want to be there? Is there any feeling of community? Is there something like music that sets a tone to help create the environment to positively impact hearts and minds? In many cases the answers are no to the questions above. We need to think about gathering differently. Perhaps we can shift the objective from information overload to capturing hearts and minds. In order to do that there needs to be a balance and cadence, like a great set list. If your people leave your next offsite and don't "feel" something, you might have missed one of THE greatest opportunities to improve, grow and accelerate results. But it won't happen by just another check the box team building activity. Finally, I forgot how many amazing SONGS Little River Band has created. What you see here is a wild melange of different old school event entertainment possibilties, e.g. live bands, fake waiters / waitresses, cigar rollers, magicians and so on. In my opinion those add ons should only complement an event and never be overpowering. I think the key to a great event, besides a cool and fitting venue, great service, high quality food/beverages and extraordinary good eye level communication with your partners and suppliers, lies in truly understanding what you want to achieve with a particular event in order to create a lasting, in every way sustainable experience. Your guests should be the focus of your thoughts with every decision when effectively using resources (human, money, material). Why start a coffee festival? After 8 or so years of producing coffee events around the world, and after a year and a of half Pandemic related nothingness, we had a chance to look around and take stock of where we were as a team and as a company. As a predominantly Gothenburg-based team, we wanted to produce more events in our actual community - both in our hometown of Gothenburg and also with and for the Swedish Coffee Community. At the same time, we saw that despite the rich history of Nordic Barista Cup, National Championships and interconnection between roasters and baristas in Sweden and the Nordics- there was really not much going on that brings different parts of the industry together on scale. And lastly - while the interest in Specialty coffee is exploding, there is no central hub or event for consumers to turn to for education, inspiration or connection with the industry. So - a coffee festival. But if we are going to do a festival, we want to push ourselves and do it better and see how sustainable we could make a coffee event.
