More than 40 years ago, Greenwich residents—including the late Tom Knight, Betsy Trippe Wainwright, and Al Ueltschi—and Dr. David Paton began meeting to launch a plane-based hospital that could reach all corners of the world, delivering cutting-edge training to eye doctors in underserved communities. From this, Orbis International was born. To renew, expand, and celebrate the relationship between Orbis and Greenwich, members of the community were invited to an event on Thursday, May 9, at the Round Hill Club. The event was co-hosted by Langdon and Lyn Cook, Jim and Alison Knight, & Bizzie and Leighton Welch. In total, more than 75 Greenwich residents came to the event to learn about our work to help improve eye care around the world. Read more below: https://lnkd.in/ehG5JAr4

UHN in Toronto moved from 4th to 3rd best hospital in the world, just behind #Mayoclinic and #clevelandclinic. What an amazing achievement… There are many insights that come to mind at the moment, but would like to share just one, which fills me with hope: I’ve been lucky enough to have worked for almost 10 years at 2 of the top 3 hospitals in the world (Mayo and UHN). Completely different organizations, mindset, processes, social/national circumstances, etc. Just completely different in almost any way. But both capable of achieving excellence at the highest level. Never think excellence is impossible! Let’s all do our best to contribute to the achievement of the highest possible level of excellence in our own environment! #medicine #medicina #excellence #excelencia #achievements #innovation #inovação #hardwork #team #trabalhoemequipe #esforço
UHN's Toronto General Hospital has climbed to third among the world's best hospitals in a global ranking from Newsweek magazine, its highest spot on the prestigious annual list! TGH's ranking behind only Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, both of the United States, makes it the top publicly-funded hospital in the world. "This recognition is only made possible because of the collective efforts of #TeamUHN – the dedicated staff, physicians, researchers, learners, philanthropists, Board members and volunteers who everyday are committed to our mission of building A Healthier World." Honoring Sacrifice, Advancing Health: A Shared Mission This Memorial Day Today, on Memorial Day, we remember the unwavering courage of fallen heroes who secured our freedoms. Their dedication inspires us to strive for a better world – a world where advancements in healthcare empower healthier lives. In the ongoing battle for human well-being, a different kind of heroism emerges. This Memorial Day, let's also honor the heroes within our own field. The dedicated researchers, coordinators, and staff who tirelessly push the boundaries of medical knowledge. Their unwavering commitment paves the way for a future where illness loses its grip. Are you a CRO or CRS seeking to make a tangible impact? May is #NECawareness Month! We'd love to hear what you are doing to help raise awareness and funds so we can #preventNEC! We chose May to be NEC Awareness Month because mothers are essential to our work of advancing NEC research, education, and advocacy. We will only build a world without NEC by partnering with and elevating mothers. Mothers provide the most protective therapy against NEC—their milk. Science is essential to our vision of a world without NEC, but it takes an average of 17 years for research evidence to reach clinical practice. We chose the 17th of May because we cannot wait 17 years for today’s emerging NEC research to reach our babies in the NICU. We need to prevent NEC now. We need a world without NEC today. Our motto “from pain to power” recognizes the profound heartache that follows a NEC diagnosis. The pain caused by NEC often stays with us for a lifetime. It takes remarkable strength to channel our anguish into helping other families and driving our organization's mission. The NEC Society is working tirelessly to accelerate research, raise awareness, and build a world without NEC by keeping babies and families centered in everything we do. We invite you to share how NEC has impacted your life and support the NEC Society by recognizing NEC Awareness Month. You can join our movement at https://lnkd.in/gmxU8Px3

I am enjoying the habit of boosting examples of leadership in action. Perhaps I should use it as a feature in the upcoming newsletter- Words can influence minds but actions build the future. Cheers to a brighter future in cancer care. Breaking News! Great news for Irvine & Santa Ana CA residents and oncology professionals. A new facility is coming to the southern CA region, bringing care options closer to home. Residents, healthcare leaders, and market stats all suggest that this is exactly what the area needs. For those living in the area, this means better options for care nearer to you, without having to drive over an hour for the type of doctor you need. Bringing top-notch care options closer to residents is critical to access and changes how many will experience treatment in the area. It means less cost to patients who travel out of town and pay for overnight stays. It means actually getting the care you deserve for those who are not able to overcome geographical and financial barriers to care in their region. For those working in rad-onc or planning to, and are from the area, you are getting a brand new facility as an option for your career. You can reconsider having to move away from your relatives to get the best job in your field. A trusted name and the best minds in the field are now in your backyard. This will drive oncology professionals to the region for better cost of living, housing, and research opportunities. Thank you to everyone involved in bringing care options closer to the southern CA region in Irvine. Let's celebrate better options for care and career opportunities for oncology workers. #Irvine #SantaAna #healthcare #oncology #careeropportunities #newfacility #healthcaretechnicalstaffing
Today, leaders from across the City of Hope system came together to launch the activation of our new and upcoming Irvine Hospital. It was a historic day as we plan for our second academic hospital in Southern California. Toward the end of the session leaders Annette Walker, Wendy Austin, Annette Morgan, M.B.A., Laura Grant, Dr. Ed Kim and I - took questions from the audience. At the start of the Q&A, there was silence for almost a minute as scores of leaders took their phones out and began taking pictures of the panel. Here is the moment Ed and I realized the audience was actually scanning the bar code above our heads in order to submit their questions - not taking a picture. Our influencer moment quickly evaporated! Thank you to all our leaders who participated. This will be an exceptional journey as we open a world class hospital in Irvine. Your talent, compassion and focus will lead to a place of healing like no other.

I was at the TransZorgNu sit-in in front of the Radboud University hospital on Sept 30. I met lovely people and heard heartbreaking stories of how the medical system denies trans people agency and good health care (see photo below: waiting time is 3+ years). Importantly, not only is there inhumane waiting time for trans health care sec, but also it's gate-kept in ways that make other care inaccessible: any other care that one may need is systematically misused to further delay or block trans health care. This is an inhumane and dehumanising situation that we all need to stand for to change. The Radboud University’s mission is to contribute to "a healthy, free world with equal opportunities for all." The trans community is too small to push for this change by themselves, especially if Radboud UMC is unwilling to talk with them openly about their needs, struggles, recommendations for improvements. The community needs the help of allies to fight for the care they deserve. Dear colleagues, please join me in letting Radboud University UMC know that we encourage them to be in open and respectful conversation with trans-led organisations and commit to creating a healthy & humane system that grants trans people agency & gives them the care they deserve. In the mean time, for trans people looking for safe, trans-friendly care, here an overview of trans-friendly GPs in the Netherlands: https://lnkd.in/dHqgwQ-e

There is a lot to gain from first-in-human trials, however embracing greater complexity is essential for successful outcomes. That especially applies to the questions of ethics and considering what risk means for the participants involved. Check out this opportunity to gain a better understanding of the issues.
Join us on February 8 for a viewing of the The Human Trial. Hosted in partnership with Clinical Trials BC, this documentary aims to increase awareness among the health research community around the complex considerations of conducting first-in-human clinical trials. Following the screening, there will be a live panel discussion with clinical trial leaders Dr. Florian Kuchenbauer, Marie Francois-Goyer, Lisa Elser, Dr. David Thompson and Dr. Tony Traboulsee. Panelists will answer key questions raised in the film and offer diverse perspectives about clinical trials. Everyone is welcome – share with your families and friends who are interested in learning more.
