Happy World Telecommunications and Information Society Day! A little history: The United Nations (UN) General Assembly first established World Telecommunications Day in 1969, which marked the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. One of the first things ITU did was establish International Morse Code in 1865. In 2006, the UN General Assembly established World Information Society Day, which focuses on the use of information and communication technologies to reduce the digital divide between people across the globe. The two days were merged in 2006 – May 17.
