We express our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Tinga Nyoni from Zimbabwe for her recent visit to the Operation Smile Care Center at the ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo, as part of our collaboration with COSECSA | The College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa. During her visit, Dr. Nyoni gained invaluable skills in the multidisciplinary approach to patient care, helping to foster continuous improvement in #healthcare delivery. Together with COSECSA, we are jointly funding the training of sixteen plastic surgeons in Sub-Saharan Africa over the next five years. This collaborative effort provides educational advancement to these surgeons, enabling us to reach more patients and strengthen the #healthsystems where we work to create sustainable solutions. This will not only facilitate the growth of our #globalhealth network but also empower the next generation of healthcare providers to deliver world-class care to patients across the communities they serve. We extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Nyoni for her unwavering dedication and eagerly anticipate the positive impact of our ongoing partnership. To delve deeper into the expertise Dr. Nyoni will bring back to Zimbabwe, watch the video below.

Working as surgeons in a developing country like Ethiopia, we possess immense potential to excel in our craft. However, this potential is dampened by the lack of support from our system, economic hardships, and a lack of appreciation and understanding from our institutions, compounded by a neglected health system. These challenges often lead us to settle for the status quo, hindering our progress and trapping us in unending cycles of stagnation. Undertaking free flaps/microsurgery in such an environment is an intimidating endeavor. The complexity of the procedure, coupled with long hours in the operating room, minimal room for error, physical exhaustion, and the constant fear of failure, weigh heavily on us. Despite these obstacles, we dared to dream of establishing this service in our setting—a bold aspiration that has now become a reality. This achievement not only marks a significant milestone for us but also places Ethiopia on the microsurgery map of Africa. We invite you to read our published paper in PRS Global, detailing the journey of establishing microsurgery services in Jimma University Medical Center, Ethiopia. We are deeply grateful for our partner #OperationSmile which supported us through out our journey. https://lnkd.in/eH9SkYWF

#Global_surgery is simply a practice of improving access to timely, quality, and affordable surgical care. It's a crucial aspect of healthcare that often goes unnoticed. Today, it's imperative to educate society about the immense burden faced globally and the pivotal roles each of us play in improving it. We can't overlook the millions suffering due to lack of access to basic surgical interventions. It's time to unite and take action. Know it Health Foundation (KHF) is already deeply involved in conducting person-to-person outreach, sensitizing communities on various common surgical conditions, preventive measures, and the availability of services. However, due to limited resources, our efforts have been localized. Our dream is to extend this vital work to underserved communities in rural Uganda and beyond, through mass sensitization campaigns. But we can't achieve this ambitious goal alone. We need your support in any form, whether it's financial contributions, collaboration, or partnerships. Together, let's make quality surgical care accessible to all, starting with those who need it the most. Great work by Dr. MAGAYA TIMOTHY of KHF If you know it, you can avoid or treat it. Let's empower the communities together 💪

Our partner, Hope of Light (HOL), focuses on surgical treatment for women with obstetric fistula and other pelvic floor disorders. They offer surgical and post-surgery training for healthcare professionals, as well as outreach programs for patient identification and obstetric fistula prevention. In our ongoing monitoring and evaluation calls with our partners, we're continually inspired by their dedication amidst challenging circumstances. Here is an insight from our recent meeting with HOL. HOL’s Fistula Center in Gonder, rural Ethiopia, confronts significant challenges amidst deteriorating security conditions, hampering travel and worsening the shortage of medical professionals. The ongoing instability in the Amhara region adds to these challenges, while changes in patient demographics highlight the difficulty in accessing healthcare services in remote regions. Despite these challenges, Hope of Light has managed to: Continue growth and training, with significant achievements in training 692 medical professionals and establishing new facilities such as the fistula center in Arba Minch. Provide treatment in Jimma, with the ability to travel safely in Jimma, HOL is able to continue its ongoing efforts to provide essential medical care. Here is a lovely quote from the Executive Director: ‘We want to thank the donors of Ethiopiaid, we have survived because of their support. On behalf of the women, we are helping. It’s because of your commitment that we can help them. #NGO #Ethiopia #Grassroots #InternationalDevelopment

👩🎓👏CONGRATULATIONS to Dr Maria Charumbira who obtained her PhD in Physiotherapy in March 2024. Her research explored the type and impact of functioning problems in adults, associated rehabilitation service needs, and practices that may strengthen primary care rehabilitation in low-resource settings. Her findings showed that patients attending primary healthcare in South Africa and Zimbabwe have a high, but unrecognized need for rehabilitation. The primary healthcare systems fall short in its ability to identify, manage and support the rehabilitation needs of people with functioning problems. Transformation in primary care rehabilitation in these countries will require an all-sector and whole-of-society approach. #PhD #graduate #physiotherapy #primarycare #rehabilitation #healthcare

🚨PUBLICATION ANNOUNCEMENT On behalf of our team, I am excited to share our manuscript entitled “Identifying opportunities for global surgery in Cameroon: an analysis of existing health policies and events” which has been published in the Pan African Medical Journal Full-text is accessible via the link below 🔗(https://lnkd.in/gXawabYp) 🎯 We aimed to analyze #Cameroon's health policies and events (HP&Es) to identify opportunities for surgical system strengthening in #Cameroon 🧵 Findings could inform #Cameroon #NSOAP development and implementation 🔍 Our methodology uses a health policy analysis framework in a global surgery context, which can be replicated. Accessible here (https://lnkd.in/gsgD7SwW) Below Are the Key Findings from our Analysis 💡 49.2% of the included HP&Es on CAMEROUN MINSANTE/SDLMCNT's online database mentioned SOTA care at least once. 💡 HP&Es on #SOTA care existed as early as 1967. 💡 The majority of the HP&Es focused on obstetrics (69%), and trauma had the lowest representation (18.6%). 💡 Most #SOTA HP&Es were on governance (42.4%), and health financing had the lowest representation (13.6%). 💡 MINSANTE funded the majority of the HP&Es ( 49.2%). 💡 We identified opportunities for #SOTA care in the #Cameroon national health strategy. 💡 We mapped the current state on #Cameroon in terms of the Six #LCoGS indicators and suggested solutions for improvement at the local, and national, and global level. 👏 Congratulations to all my co-authors, Geneviève Endalle Wah Praise MD Celestin Bilong M. Today, I had the privilege of addressing the critical factors contributing to the unmet pediatric surgical needs in underserved communities in Eastern Uganda during the #COSECSA_SCIENTIFIC_CONFERENCE held in Addis Ababa. 🏥 Here are some key points I shared in my research paper: 1️⃣ Financial Hurdles Persist: The predominant barrier hindering access to surgical care remains financial challenges. 2️⃣ Community Health Literacy Matters: We shed light on the existing gap in community health literacy concerning surgical conditions and services. Empowering communities with basic knowledge to make well informed health decisions is pivotal in breaking down barriers and fostering a culture of health awareness towards surgical conditions and surgical services. 3️⃣ Equipments Matter: We highlighted the pressing need for quality surgical equipment. Access to cutting-edge tools is paramount for ensuring safe and effective surgeries. Advocating for improved infrastructure is a step towards elevating the overall quality of surgical care. 4️⃣ Pediatric surgeons and operation theater : The inadequacy of pediatric surgeons and the lack of dedicated pediatric theaters in regional hospitals emerged as critical issues. 5️⃣ Addressing Inequality in Surgical Centers: The unequal distribution of centers for complex surgical procedures was discussed, aiming to bridge the gap between regions. By advocating for a more balanced distribution, we strive for equitable access to advanced surgical interventions. 🙏🌟 A heartfelt thank you to #KidsOR for the endless technical and financial support rendered to me from the start of this research project upto the end. Together, we can build a healthier and more equitable future. 💙🤝 #SurgicalAccess #HealthEquity #CommunityCare #kidsOR

How many more deaths we need to see before stopping such atrocities!!! Thanks Professor Shafi Ahmed for sharing this article.
Please read this article on Dr Sara Al-Saqqa, a surgeon in Gaza. The surgeons in Gaza are going though the most difficult times that are impossible for anyone to even begin to contemplate. Sara has shared her experiences daily on her Instagram feed. I suggest you follow her account to get an idea of the life facing Palestinians in this conflict. The account is @sara_alsaqqa. Her feed and story depict the harrowing reality, utter devastation and humiliation inflicted by the Israeli army as well as the resilience of the Palestinian people in Gaza. I first met Sara in 2016 as a trainee in Gaza and have watched her become a very accomplished and talented specialist general surgeon. The first female certified surgeon in Gaza and her journey has inspired many others to follow. During the first days of the conflict she worked 34 days continuously without a break and lived like many doctors in the hospital which was overwhelmed with casualties. The surgeons there in my experience are highly accomplished and dedicated. When Israel began its air strikes, it had told Gazans to evacuate the north and move south saying they would be safer there. But Sara bravely decided to stay. Indeed nowhere was safe ultimately. I remember when she shared the story of having to leave at gunpoint her job at Al Shifa Hospital and had to march to the south of Gaza. Her personal sadness, desperation and devastation of leaving her patients and her work was truly heartbreaking. It also left a huge mark on those that followed her journey. The conflict will leave an indelible mark on my surgical colleagues in Gaza who I miss on a daily basis. She has been quite rightly included in the BBC list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2023. She continues to share her experiences and that of the Palestinians in Gaza. Emergency medicine has been a topic, more so a medical specialty that so happened to pique my interest today! This curiosity intensified after getting a chance to hear from brilliant minds at the GEMINI Symposium who; -were directly involved with this form of health care ie. Emergency medicine physicians, Researchers etc. -as well as those who were indirectly involved ie. Data analysts and project coordinators. Seeing how far Tanzania has progressed in this sector, an amazing part played by the Kcmc-Duke Collaboration is a joy indeed; All thanks to; •The Researches conducted back to back to identify and address the problem at it’s root and for those identified in the clinical settings ,a good example being Injuries (Traumatic brain injuries, bone injuries). •More emphasis on Capacity building and Patient Participation Involvement. •Tremendous collection of data concerning the major causes of the Emergency medicine cases; and different strategies on how to mitigate and reduce the problems at hand. —Not to forget the equipment and facilities introduced for the EMD to use. The current surfacing challenges as well as the chronic ones that still persist till this day were also addressed in the conference. This gave us listeners a clear view on how much work still has to be done to encourage everyday improvement in this sector and how much benefiting it may be to the Population at hand. All for the betterment of health #Quality_health_services_for_all #EmergencyMedicine #GeminiSymposium #Research #Learning
