My parents often talked about the challenges of being self-employed business owners. I never truly understood what they meant until I decided to leave the nonprofit sector in 2020 and do it on my own. It's been four long, hard years on my own and though there are so many amazing things about being an entrepreneur and self-employed, I am also hearing from colleagues and family members on how hard it is to make it. It makes me wonder: Does our government (federal and local) support small and local business or is that just a political talking point? More importantly though: What do you think needs to change in the United Corporation of America in order to support entrepreneurs and small businesses? Our workplace culture could improve so much and it would improve our collective well-being and in turn, improve global well-being. But global well being doesn't translate into monetary profits for the ruling class. United For ALICE is a driver of innovation, research, and action to improve life across the country for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and for all. Through the development of the ALICE measurements, a comprehensive, unbiased picture of financial hardship has emerged. Harnessing this data and research on the mismatch between low-paying jobs and the cost of survival, ALICE partners convene, advocate, and collaborate on solutions that promote financial stability at local, state, and national levels. The ALICE research quantifies and describes the number of households that are struggling financially. This project raises awareness about a huge but hidden segment of our community that is struggling to afford basic necessities.
