3 Common Traits of High-Performing Health Benefit Plans As I continue to study the successes and failures of health benefit plans, I'm struck by a recurring theme. The employer-sponsored health benefit plans that I see enjoying the most success consistently have three things in common. 1. A highly motivated internal benefits leader This is a person (regardless of actual title or internal organization) who comes to work every day thinking about how to make the company health benefit plan better for the plan members and the company sponsor. Frequently they are both empathetic and analytical. Frequently, benefits is a major part of their job duties. It's not buried under other priorities or job duties. Next... 2. A supportive and engaged C-suite member This is the person with the internal capital and decision-making authority to make things happen inside the company. They also provide important 'sponsorship' for innovation and change and they provide 'air cover' for those who are trying to bring innovation and improvement. Can be the CHRO, CFO, CEO, COO. Doesn't matter, as long as they're providing support and leadership. Also, no benefits 'expertise' is required. Curiosity and lots of questions go a long way in this space. And last, but not least... 3. An aligned benefits consultant (if the company uses one) If a consultant is used, this is a person who wants what the company wants... high-value employee healthcare benefits that help attract and retain the best talent. This is also, most often, a person whose compensation is correlated with the achievement of this objective. The key take away... Remove any part of this three-legged stool and the company is more likely (in my experience) to have a poorly performing health benefit plan. Stated differently, a company can have any two of the important 'ingredients' above, but if just one is missing, the health plan is more likely to be subpar. For those that work with a lot of health benefit plans, Agree or Disagree?
