Investor relations used to be closely tied to PR - it was basically just a strategy for pumping up the price of a company’s stock. Obviously, that’s no longer the case (in fact, some of those approaches are now illegal). But in making the transition to communicating pure fact, companies have overcorrected. Investor relations now rely primarily on finance teams for information, which can create a bottleneck in releasing timely, successful communications. Contemporary investor relations are tied to the CFO. And let’s face it: most CFOs aren’t born communicators. Factor in legal issues with releasing information, and you get a perfect storm of missed messaging opportunities. The remedy is making sure that management - which includes both the CEO and the CFO - understands their role in investor communications. What’s the best way to do that? Focus on internal branding. Communicate visually. Walk the line between being a news organization and selling the organization. Overcorrection is an important part of progress. But companies still have a ways to go when it comes to running effective investor relations.
