Today is #WorldFoodDay, celebrating the founding of FAO while highlighting actions that are needed to achieve more resilient food systems worldwide. This year’s World Food Day theme is “Water is life, water is food.” The campaign calls for actions to better manage water within the growing demand for food. According to ReFED, uneaten food consumes 22% of all freshwater use in the US alone. In order to protect this limited resource, we need to dramatically transform our #foodsystems. Who controls our food system and why does it matter? In 2021, the widely-criticized UN Food Systems Summit launched an initiative to transform the global food system, working through so-called national pathways. This week, they are meeting to assess their progress. The first results of new research suggest that grassroots movements, small-scale farmers’ representatives, and peoples’ organisations in most countries have not been given the opportunity to shape these pathways, and peoples’ proposals for food sovereignty have not been included or supported. https://lnkd.in/eY4jdxVm #UNFSS2023 #UNFSS #FoodSystems4People #foodsovereignty #foodsecurity

16 October - World Food Day 🥣 World Food Day is marked on 16 October each year. It commemorates the founding of the #UN’s #Food and #Agriculture Organization in 1945. Hundreds of events and outreach activities around the world bring together governments, businesses, the public and the media to promote awareness and action for those suffering from hunger. After 34 years it was recognized as a world holiday at the 20th #FAO conference in November 1979. Following this, 150 countries proceeded to celebrate the day after it gained its official recognition by the United Nations. For the year 2023, the theme of the World Food Day is – “Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind". “Water is essential to life on Earth. It covers the majority of the Earth's surface, makes up over 50% of our bodies, produces our food, and supports livelihoods. But this precious resource is not infinite, and we need to stop taking it for granted. What we eat, and how that food is produced all affect water. Together, we can take water action for food and be the change," says the Food and Agriculture Organisations of the United States on its official website.

On February 9th, the Vancouver Food Justice Coalition (VFJC) will be hosting the Vancouver Food Systems Dialogue at the City Hall – an exciting opportunity for government, community organizations, and individuals with lived experience to gather, connect, learn, and work together to build a more equitable, just, resilient, and sustainable food system for all Vancouver residents. Key topics covered during the Dialogue will include cultural food assets, urban agriculture, place-based community food programming, and food waste and recovery. The event will be recorded and we will be sharing some key highlights. For the full event recording, please email us at vanfoodjustice@gmail.com Today we are inviting you to learn more about Indigenous Food Systems! Embracing the wisdom of the medicine wheel, Indigenous Food Systems in Vancouver harmonize with nature, valuing land, water, air, and spirituality. Indigenous peoples, guided by a 'take care of the land, and it will take care of us' principle, view lands, foods, and medicines as the essence of life. Indigenous food sovereignty highlights the innate right of Indigenous peoples to be in charge of their food system, including the ability to define their own food sources and processes, such as the decision to hunt, trap, fish, gather, harvest, grow, and eat based on Indigenous culture and ways of life. Meaningful decolonization requires us to rebuild healthy land and proper ecosystem functioning if we are to restore indigenous foodlands. The City of Vancouver acknowledges the impact on Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples' access to lands, committing to reconciliation through the Vancouver Plan and UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). The UNDRIP Strategy aligns with Indigenous food sovereignty, and requiring support for indigenous-led initiatives and Indigenous stewardship knowledge. The 2021 Vancouver Parks Board Local Food Assets Action Plan focuses on systems change, emphasizing Indigenous knowledge, equity, partnerships, and long-term sustainability. Supporting Indigenous-led projects, especially through the Parks Board Plan, is critical for meaningful reconciliation. Learn more about Indigenous Food Systems in Vancouver in the VFJC Food Sector Briefings. https://lnkd.in/gbRF8h73 #vanpoli #foodsystems #foodsecurity #foodjustice #indigenousfood #foodsovereignty
