Lawmakers Flock to Prevent Birds From Dying in Collisions With Public Buildings https://lnkd.in/gFdgxjCw via @GovExec While this article gives some good information it does miss one key point. Even without this legislation, the GSA already updated the P100 Facilities Standards for Public Buildings Services in 2021 with requirements for Bird-Safe Building Design. This requires that all projects (BA51 and BA55) including new construction and major repairs/alterations meet the following Bird-Safe requirements, All glass from grade to 40 feet and all glass 15 feet from a green roof must have a Threat Factor of 30 or less. It also requires all glazed corners and fly-through conditions to use glass with a Threat Factor 25 or less. In addition, it suggests using ABC's Bird-Safe Building Design Guide or NGA's Best Practices for Bird-friendly Glazing Design. Bird-Safe building design is still a relatively new but growing trend. Whether you are working on a new federal building and need to comply with the P100 or a mixed-use tower in NYC and have to follow LL15 engaging with a knowledgeable expert in this field can make a big difference.

Designing spaces with animals in mind can lead to innovative and thoughtful solutions. Here are a few interesting projects and ideas related to interior design and animals: 1. Animal🐕️ Aided Design: Students Evie Boyce and Catherine Westhead from the Manchester School of Architecture developed a project that focuses on climate and biodiversity concerns in urban areas. Their concept aims to “de-center” humans, emphasizing collaboration with more-than-human actors. The project protects bee populations while facilitating human-nature interactions. 2. Farm🧑🌾 Therapy: Nigar Hasanzade, an interior design student at Middlesex University, created a therapy center that provides rehabilitation for both animals and people. Mistreated farm animals find comfort and sanctuary here, while visitors with mental and physical health issues benefit from interacting with the creatures. The center includes a veterinary clinic, therapy spaces, and a city farm. 3. Metro Hands-Free Dog Leash🐶: Product design student Derin Avunduk designed a wearable crossbody harness called the “Metro Hands-Free Dog Leash.” It’s perfect for dog sitters and anyone walking multiple dogs. The leash aims to make dog walking smoother and more convenient.
