Each year, #bacterialinfections cause an estimated 7.7 million deaths, with nearly 5 million linked to drug-resistant bacteria. The Lancet has published a series of papers, with experts brought together by OHT’s Dr. Ramanan Laxminarayan, on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The series elucidates the problem and proposes solutions to the growing threat to #globalhealth. Dr. Iruka Okeke, professor of the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria helped write the first of these papers. Listen to the One World, One Health #podcast, as she talks about the growing threat of #AMR to global health and the need for a multifaceted approach to address this issue. What would you do to help Dom and others like him? Please watch the 2 min video to gain just a glimpse into their lives and the amazing people supporting them on their journey to deliver a better future. FightMND and PharmAust have teamed up to complete their Ph1 Monepantel trial. So hold onto your seats for the results to be announced NEXT WEEK where the data is highly anticipated to back up the astonishing survival rate of trial participants. Statistically, there is less than a 1 in 1000 probability the 12 brave patients would still be here today. They all continue on Monepantal and they do this by swallowing pills every day. If the statistical data matches the stunning results in survivability & tolerability - this will be world news and a potential major breakthrough for ALS / MND. Particularly with two of the current standard of care drugs under a cloud (and note, sadly there are only 4 drugs approved). What is more exciting is that FightMND are considering getting equity in PharmAust to not just support the trail through grants but to be part owners the solution. Wouldn't that be something very special with success looking very likely. There is potential that, on completion of this next trial, the drug could be on the market and available to patients in Europe, USA and Australia. Wow! Maybe even sooner if approved in some countries. Next week is also Rare Diseases Day (29 Feb 24) so take a few minutes to do your own research. Monepantel could be a game changer in the broader neurological disease space tomorrow. Find out more: https://fightmnd.org.au/ https://www.pharmaust.com/ PAA.ASX

⬇️”The Gift of Adventure that this 35th Gene Key invites into your life, is not an external pursuit, but rather an inner journey to bridging the old ways into the new that are coming. If we are to experience this higher nature of Adventure, then first we must harness this shadow of Hunger to create time and space within our every day to go inwards. To allow room for a contemplative lifestyle. Even if one is very active outwardly, it is still possible to remain a deeply contemplative being and move slowly inwardly. Collectively we are preparing for this great leap. Gathering our resources, redefining for each of us alone and collectively, what is actually required to satiate the hunger and how to find new ways of distribution that incentivise heart centred action rather than mind driven obsessions.” - Extract from 35TH GENE KEY – THE HUNGRY GRASSHOPPER 🔥Read full 35th GK Blog Post here: https://lnkd.in/g79PksuS

L-DOPA is the best drug we have for Parkinson’s disease, but its molecular mirror image, D-DOPA, causes dangerous side effects. Making L-DOPA without D-DOPA is surprisingly hard, and requires a specific kind of molecule to pull off. But getting that specific molecule requires, another, different and equally specific molecule, and so on, and so on. In this video, host George Zaidan explains how Bill Knowles, who received the 2001 #NobelPrize in Chemistry for this feat, pulled it off, and why “chiral synthesis”, as it’s called, is really just turtles all the way down. I felt a whirlwind of emotions after watching "#FireInTheBlood." This documentary unveiled the heartbreaking injustices in the pharmaceutical industry, but it also highlighted the resilience and determination of some incredible individuals. Huge thanks to the producers and directors who brought this powerful story to light. Your work has ignited a fire within me to advocate for change. To the tireless activists like James P. Love, Yusuf Hameed, Prof. Peter Mugyenyi, Zackie Achmat, and all the activists across the world, thank you for your unwavering commitment to justice. You are the real superstars, fighting for affordable, life-saving medicines for every person in need, especially in the third world. Watching this documentary is part of the modules under the Global Health in Local Context course by Equal Health. I'm fortunate to be a part of a new cohort in 2023. It's helping us understand the impact of neoliberalism and geopolitical factors on health and global power dynamics. As James P. Love reminds us, we have the power to make a difference. With 18 million preventable and curable disease-related deaths, we can't afford to stand idly by. We have an obligation to challenge patent clauses that prevent Africa and other emergency-forward countries from accessing life-saving medications. People's lives are at stake, and countries capable of producing generic drugs should be able to distribute them without barriers imposed by international organizations. We must defy the World Trade Organization's practices that could price out these drugs and prioritize big pharmaceutical companies over human lives. Let's join forces and challenge the status quo. Here is the link to the documentary on YouTube. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dQ_mV8Wg Together, we can change the world and combat the effects of neoimperialism and global politics on health. Let's honor the legacy of those who fought for affordable medications and ensure that this great cause continues to shine bright. I'm deeply moved and inspired to become a more active advocate. #FireInTheBlood #Activism #ChangeMakers #PharmaceuticalInjustice #GlobalHealth #GlobalPower #Neoliberalism #Geopolitics #PatentClauses #AffordableMedications
