Yesterday, James Anderson represented IFPMA at the United Nations Multistakeholder meetings on antimicrobial resistance (#AMR). It was an important opportunity to provide three key asks from the pharmaceutical industry ahead of the UN High-Level Meeting on AMR in September: 1️⃣ Long-term political commitment with each country setting targets for improvement, and a clear follow-up mechanism, supported by an Independent Evidence Panel to provide robust guidance. 2️⃣ Progress towards Universal Health Coverage to make sure that patients can receive antibiotics when they need them, and are protected with relevant vaccinations, whereever they live. 3️⃣ Urgent government action to stimulate R&D to make sure we have a pipeline of new antibiotics to keep us ahead of emerging resistance and protect the world. The cost of not doing so would be devastating. We underlined this in a discussion paper looking at what the antibiotic pipeline could look like in the next 10 years if effective incentives were implemented - and how it will continue to decline if they are not.

Addressing #antimicrobialresistance #AMR starts with preventing #infections. #Vaccines are important tool in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. A #vaccine directly blocks the transmission of pathogens that cause infections. Decreasing transmission decreases the number of infections and reduces the chance of a #pathogen mutating to a drug resistant form. In addition, people protected by vaccines are less likely to get sick as often, which helps reduce the overall consumption of #antibiotics. Vaccines decrease the risk of both acquiring and transmitting resistant pathogens and help to reduce #antibiotic use. A recent analysis suggests that vaccines can avert a large proportion of the health burden associated with AMR. This helps to protect populations, is #costeffective for #healthsystems, and will helps to ensure that antimicrobial medicines remain effective – now and for future generations. #WAAW2003 #WorldAMRAwarenessWeek #WAAW https://lnkd.in/e9Gnx8sh
