In December 2020, the world first became aware of COVID-19 when the novel coronavirus outbreak was reported in Wuhan, China. While the virus wreaked havoc in several countries across various continents in the following months, it found little success in Singapore, a tiny island nation in southeast Asia. This week's #digest includes a #study by OHT’s Dr. Srikanth Reddy on how #health status impacts #labor outcomes for middle-aged and older adults in India. #Illhealth impacts labor force participation globally, yet #age differences are often overlooked. The study addresses this gap by examining how ill health affects labor outcomes among different age groups in India. Data from over 72,000 individuals aged 45 and above from the Longitudinal #Ageing Study show that ill-health reduces labor participation by 28 percent for middle-aged and 36 percent for elderly individuals. The impact on #wages and hours worked varies by age, with elderly individuals being more affected. The One Health Trust’s Dr. Geetanjali Kapoor attended a stakeholders’ meeting commemorating the partnership between the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Innovation Fund (GAMRIF) and the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) on July 24 at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. This partnership, part of the India AMR Innovation Hub (IAIH), aims to create innovative solutions to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment in India and beyond. Over the next three years, this collaboration will focus on top environmental AMR and One Health issues in India and other low-and-middle-income countries. The partnership will begin with an AMR challenge under the IAIH, inviting innovators and startups to apply for funding and ecosystem support. This support will help scale up technology, increase production, and enhance the impact of their solutions. This week's digest covers a #study by OHT researchers Amit Summan, Arindam Nandi,, and Ramanan Laxminarayan on #nutritional outcomes in #children under five post-COVID. They analyzed data from India’s National Family Health Survey 2019-2021 to assess post-COVID nutritional outcomes among children. The study revealed that under-five children had 1.2 percent higher #underweight rates, 0.10 percent lower #height-for-age Z-scores, and 0.04 percent lower weight-for-height Z-scores than children of the same #age in the pre-#pandemic period. Although a partial recovery was observed in the post-pandemic period between 2020 and 2021, some outcomes, including #weight, did not fully recover, especially among children from #rural and low-income households. Due to crowded farming conditions, a large portion of antibiotics used in raising fish and other marine food (aquaculture), is administered to prevent illness rather than treat infection. These practices contribute to the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance. With fish rapidly expanding as a global nutrition source, improved antimicrobial surveillance and stewardship in the aquaculture industry are important.
