Today I’m opening a new chapter as I start my first day as the CEO of Pearson, the world’s leading learning company. I felt like I couldn’t let the day go by without expressing how delighted I am to be working with the Pearson team to make our mark on the world. Pearson is a strong company with excellent market potential, people committed to our mission, and a purpose that can genuinely help society. Very often, someone’s opportunities in life are determined by things out of their control: where they were born or how they were raised. Education and learning are among the few real ways we can level the playing field. I believe that our lifelong learning vision has the potential to make a difference in the lives of many people. Over the last three years, Pearson has created early momentum in this direction for educators, teachers, learners, employers and workers. I’m excited to build on that, growing Pearson further for all our stakeholders. What’s more, our world is at an inflection point with technology, specifically AI. I think of myself as a “techno-optimist” and believe that the advances we are seeing today have the potential to help us build our business for our customers and do good in the world. These are the reasons that have brought me to Pearson. Over the next 100 days, my job will be to listen and learn by spending time with our people, customers, and investors. I’m excited to meet the folks who are making a difference and solving problems for learners and customers. I want to understand what’s happening in the company and in the world around us that can create opportunities for Pearson and help us add life to a lifetime of learning. If you have thoughts, feel free to drop me a line or a comment below. I’m curious by nature, and my curiosity is really in high gear now as we take the evolution of learning to the next level!
So thrilled to see you apply your humanity, curiosity and leadership to education. I love what you said about leveling the playing field and am cheering for you always.
You'll accomplish amazing things at Pearson. Microsoft Media & Entertainment is there to support you every step of the way! This will be your finest chapter 😀
I love your curiosity and desire to learn from your employees and customers. So many new CEOs don’t take the time at the start of their tenure to learn - learn the business, learn from their employees - what keeps them up at night, learn from customers and the differences globally and learn from other who are influencers and can help to validate the learnings. Bravo to you. I look forward to your future posts to hear about your 100 day journey and how you plan to incorporate your learnings to grow and elevate the Pearson brand.
Online behavior rating scales need to be printable and charged for when scored. A separate subscription for digital vs. paper shouldn’t be needed. A competitor does this, and tbh that drives their product forward as a preference for users.
Let's pivot towards development, measurement and celebration of lifeworthy competencies so as to raise good humans in the age of AI. Learning isn't a single, sequential thread but instead a dynamic and individual developmental story. Yes we need entry and exit points but we also need to embrace individual experiences of learning as part of national qualifications. Blockchain is part of the answer here. Also, you should join the Coalition to Honour All Learning...
Congratulations! As a founder of the charity Svitlo Education whose students in Ukraine benefit from Pearson since the start of the war, I would love to be share our experience of learning. Here is a short video to demonstrate our successful partnership with Pearson so far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V00brp1lnzA&t=10s
Congratulations Omar Abbosh and good luck. You are spot on with the impact of education and how it can drive social mobility and equality. There are excellent training and learning platforms but I've not seen one that replicates the coaching and guidance from a 1:1 tutor (which is often the preserve of those that can pay); this is one area where AI could make a real difference and be a further leveler.
Congrats Omar. I'm sure you'll make a tremendous impact at Pearson.
I’ll be intrigued to see what you decide to do after your 100-day listening and learning spell…as you say, education is such an important lever for advancing people and society. Best of luck…
Omar Abbosh congrats! Welcome!!
