Congrats to our doctoral candidate Bunmi Lawoyin for her recent published article review in Voluntus: The International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations. Bunmi shares these thoughts on the article: "This book was compelling as it sheds light on the intrinsic strengths of African philanthropy, effectively challenging the prevailing narrative that portrays Africans solely as passive beneficiaries of Western philanthropy. It highlights the rich tradition of giving and community support inherent in African societies." Her article is here: https://lnkd.in/gk_rT8z4 And her Ph.D. bio is here: https://lnkd.in/gGNy5dug. Recently, Ryan Robertson discussed the importance and benefits of missionaries prioritizing support from local churches. "This doesn’t mean missionaries should stop seeking support from friends and family. But they’d do well to prioritize raising support from local churches for the accountability, partnership, connectivity, and encouragement that can be gained there." Peace Corps Ethiopia changed my life! It broadened my world and developed my confidence! iFLY Youth sends girls of color from the DMV overseas. Through our programming, we are determined to answer the following questions: 1) What would happen if girls from underserved communities learned about the world through first-hand real-world experiences in addition to textbooks and social media? 2) How might international travel change the trajectory of their personal, academic and professional lives? I could not imagine going on a trip with girls who looked like me! I wonder how that experience would've shaped my life. Today is Giving Black Day, please consider sharing with your network to spread the word - both about the program and for folks to consider donating! https://lnkd.in/g-Wz_57R Want to know where your money goes? $25 covers a meal at a local restaurant for a scholar $50 covers the cost of camp supplies for a scholar $75 covers the cost of a cultural activity (ex. cooking class). $150 covers passport fees (passport book + photo) $300 covers lodging for one scholar for a week

The Solidarity Collaborative’s work will draw from and build upon existing efforts of leaders and organizations at the forefront of solidarity work, offering inspiring examples of what is possible with greater intentionality around and investment in robust solidarity efforts. These examples include a series of cross-community Solidarity Summits, dedicated to fostering and supporting solidarity among social justice communities, where leaders such as Judith Browne Dianis were able to come together and share in their experiences. In our recent case study, Dianis, Executive Director of the Advancement Project, shares about how Solidarity Summits offered the unique opportunity to learn about movement building and resource sharing alongside fellow social justice philanthropic leaders. The study ‘Shifting power dynamics: Equity, diversity and inclusion in the nonprofit sector’, shows that despite facing greater barriers and funder expectations, Black, Indigenous, racialized-led organizations are leading the advancement of equity, diversity and inclusion in the sector. https://buff.ly/443Sr0h The study is a clear wakeup call that nonprofits - especially white-led organizations - have not sufficiently prioritized EDI. Funders also have a key role to play in financially supporting organizations in their EDI journey and, equally important, putting in place practices and systems that don’t disadvantage equity-seeking organizations. This project was led by the #EquitableRecoveryCollective, and supported by Lead Partner, Scotiabank, with additional support from Canadian Red Cross, Community Foundations of Canada, and KCI. Key findings and recommendations for nonprofit leaders and funders are available at https://buff.ly/443Sr0h
