Inspired by Pickford’s water bottle at the weekend, here is a snap of my Huel Shaker that I take to every meeting. Really helps me come across as super smart in all my meetings. 🤓 …joke shamelessly stolen from Sarah Cooper's book on “100 Tricks To Appear Smart in Meetings” I have a love hate relationship with meetings. Sometimes they can feel like wasted time and other times the back and forth over email could be better served as a quick meeting. And the dying art of picking up the phone is often under utilised. As a hybrid business across multiple locations, effective communication is something we are always working on at Huel. While it could always be better, Huel is one of the most open and transparent businesses I have worked for. Our twice weekly all company stand up is an excellent way for our Hueligans to stay up to date. Some of the guidelines we have given our team to make meetings more effective, include: ✅ Do your homework and prepare. Include agenda and desired outcomes in your invite. ✅ Send a pre-read if needed. Don’t waste meeting time trying to digest information. ✅ Take notes and follow up to make sure actions are taken from the meeting ✅ Keep it relevant and “park” side conversations if they are taking us off topic ✅ Don’t be afraid to decline a meeting, or leave if you are not needed ✅ Be punctual. Be present. Any other ideas to make meetings more productive, please let me know! 🤔 Join the team at careers.huel.com #huel #hueligans #productivity #communication #itscominghome
Ollie Scheers I also like to add these 2 things to my meeting agendas. Helps make sure there is clarity on why the meeting is needed. Context of Meeting (decision-based, inform, get input etc) If decision-based, 1) what is the decision? 2) who needs to make decision? 3) is it a one-way door decision? If yes, why?
Great post...some other ideas. - Always have a clear purpose and outcome for the meeting and check every topic aligns. - Set topic times and have a topic presenter who doesn't need to be the meeting host - Score every meeting 1-10 and collect feedback to improve future meetings - Add meeting performance to 1-2-1 performance reviews - Agree on meeting rules that support your core values - Agree an accountability policy to drive actions
If you can include the outcomes in the meeting invite, why meet, Ollie Scheers? Just kidding, I know you meant DESIRED outcome. Loved the bottled tips.
"Ask to go back one slide for no reason" - 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
Nailed it; 60% of the time, it works every time. 👏🏻
Hmmm call bullshit on the list........ No one, and I mean no one ever reads the pre-read!!! That's just pure fantasy and negates the rest of the list (regardless of how sensible the rest of the list might have been but I never got that far)
Completely agree with you, Ollie Scheers, about using the phone. I love the shocked response I get when I phone someone instead of replying to an email, text or whatever. But according to Debrett’s, apparently I should text beforehand to prepare the person for a call. 😳 https://debretts.com/the-new-rules-of-mobile-etiquette/
"Go back one slide" 😂

2wWhat Jordan Pickford should do now is have a list of the Dutch penalty takers but with the opposite details of how they take penalties. Provided he then parades that water bottle around for everyone to see, come Wednesday and another penalty shootout, they will think he'll go the wrong way. Of course, after the first two are saved, the Dutch will be thinking he's played them with his bottle but by then England will be 2 up and the remaining Dutch players will be in a quandary about whether they should stick with what they practiced or try something new. Alternatively Gareth Southgate instructs his team to concede a goal in the first minute as the only time England seem to play is when they are behind. Decisions, decisions.
