Campaigning for the Liberal Democrats in The Cities of London and Westminster parliamentary constituency, supporting our candidate Edward Lucas
VOTE FOR EDWARD LUCAS ON JULY 4TH. The heart of our country’s security lies in our constituency. Edward Lucas, who has spent years of his life living in dictatorships as a correspondent, understands how vital it is that those working at the sharp end of our security services, in MI6 and the military, are listened to – and understood - by those in power. Again and again, however, our rulers have not listened to these defence and security experts. Edward’s experience, and his extensive writings in The Times, The Economist and elsewhere on issues relating to security, espionage, and hybrid- and cyber-warfare, make him uniquely qualified to take on this responsibility. He sees how the local issues and concerns that he campaigns on at home are inextricably linked with the security of our country and the threats to its interests that it faces globally. As Edward says, the first duty of the state is to defend the country and its people, and yet he finds himself deeply worried at the unreadiness of the UK to do this. This is informed by his life experience of taking on dictators (Edward has been beaten up, arrested, interrogated and deported), working with allies, participating in the struggles for freedom in Eastern Europe and elsewhere since the 1980s, speaking the languages and knowing the people of that region. “Nothing I have done matters more to me than this campaign” – at a time when the hard-won liberties and freedoms at home that we have for so long taken for granted are so severely under threat. #security #defence #defense #nationalsecurity #internationalsecurity #espionage #military #armedforces #EdMinster #TwoCities #Westminster #CentralLondon #CityOfLondon #elections #elections2024 #generalelection #generalelection2024 #Parliament #HouseofCommons #winninghere #forafairdeal #libdems #liberaldemocrats Liberal Democrats Hear more about Edward Lucas - https://lnkd.in/e_dAuZ7J Join the Campaign - https://lnkd.in/eYWrxyR4 Published and promoted by L. A logical and thoughtful plan.
We’re not a direct democracy. We are a *constitutional republic.* We need to revive civic duty among young Americans. That’s why I’m for a constitutional amendment to raise the voting age from 18 to 25, but to still allow 18-year-olds to vote if they either pass the same civics test required of immigrants to become naturalized citizens, or else to perform 6 months of military or first responder service. We must be ambitious.
We are a Constitutional Republic

Imagine waking up and being told that your country has transitioned into a dictatorship. On this day, April 21, 1967, that unimaginable scenario became a harsh reality for the people of Greece. A group of right-wing army officers (pictured), led by Brigadier Stylianos Pattakos and Colonels George Papadopoulos and Nikolaos Makarezos, seized power in a swift and calculated coup d'état, just weeks before scheduled elections! Tanks rolled into strategic positions in Athens, and within hours, the entire city fell under their control. Political figures, authority figures, and ordinary citizens suspected of left-wing sympathies were swiftly rounded up, with over 10,000 people arrested according to pre-prepared lists. The suspension of eleven articles of the Greek constitution meant that anyone could be arrested without warrant and brought before a military court. The grip of fear tightened as dissent was silenced, and the very fabric of democracy was torn apart. Why dwell on events from over half a century ago? Because they serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of democracy. It underscores the importance of staying informed, remaining vigilant, and actively engaging in the protection of our liberal democracies. Let us not forget the lessons of history. Let us honour the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom and democracy. And let us commit ourselves to safeguarding these principles for generations to come. #Democracy #History #StayInformed #ProtectDemocracy

"Vive la Républic !" a commentary by Simeon Morrow BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA: we Westerners believe that public figures are charged with voicing our hopes, dreams, discontents and pain and inspiring us to action. Violence against, and suppression of, political voices is simply not who we are or what we do: that’s Vladimir Putin’s Russia - a sterile political body that throws healthcare professionals out of windows because of honest diagnosis, military leaders turn their tanks on each other because of strategic disagreement and political courage is rewarded, quite fittingly, with poisoned underwear. It’s Bastille Day and high time for us to honor the sacrifices our Western compatriots have been making since before 1789 and 1776. What better way than by unanimously voicing our disapproval of the assassination attempt against Former U.S. President Donald Trump? An attack against Former President Trump is an attack against the West. Like it or not, he is one of our representatives: our societies are so strong and resilient that we defend the right for all political voices to be heard. Yes, unto death we will defend even a voice calling for the end of our republican rights. Effective government requires our participation Today’s column by Heather Cox Richardson, an American historian, summarizes the disorder caused by Republican Party leadership: * a U.S. House of Representatives that is unable to function because no leader has been elected * a proposed Speaker of the House, Steve Scalise, who previously compared himself to Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke “without the baggage” and went along with the lie that Donald Trump won the 2020 Presidential election * a U.S. Senator, Tommy Tuberville, who has placed holds on more than 300 military promotions and other diplomatic positions because he opposes a rarely used policy allowing military women in anti-abortion states to travel to other states to get an abortion * a U.S. Supreme Court that ruled in Rucho versus Common Cause that although partisan gerrymandering is incompatible with democratic principles, it cannot be challenged in federal court. It can only be challenged in state court, which is usually not a practical remedy because these courts are typically dominated by the same party that produced the gerrymandering. 🌟 Happy to have presented at the 2024 ASN Convention! 🌟 I discussed illiberal memory laws in Southeastern Europe: how these laws shape the narrative of the wars of the 1990s and WWII, and their impact on reconciliation and transitional justice efforts. 🕊️⚖️ #ASNConvention #MemoryLaws #Reconciliation #TransitionalJustice #SoutheasternEurope
