Everyone has a right to basic healthcare but this begs the question, is every individual able to access quality healthcare services? Access in this case means two separate things: 1. Cost 2. Availability With many people struggling to cover the basic needs, it is no wonder that they cannot afford to go to a decent hospital. They cannot also afford the medication. There are cases where the patient cannot even afford to get to the hospital in the first place. During these free medical camps powered by Zuri Health courtesy of MPESA Foundation, we have gotten to see that there is still alot to be done and more ground to cover. One player cannot do it all. South Africa spent an estimated R547bn on healthcare in the financial year to end-March 2023, compared to around R529bn in the previous fiscal year, with the private sector accounting for approximately 51.5% and the public sector around 48.5% The healthcare sector in South Africa report includes hospitals and other services such as blood banks, pathology laboratories and emergency medical services. I was privileged this week to attend and participate in the first ever International Conference on the PEN-plus Regional Strategy to Address Severe NCDs in Africa, #ICPPA, in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Both #PEN and #PEN-Plus seek to strengthen management of NCDs at primary and first referral levels of the healthcare systems. Key lesson leant: keep people at the center of all interventions; decision-makers, care providers and those who consume the services (in increasing order of importance). Integration is the proposed model, and digital health a key enabler; however, it's people's voices that will ultimately light the way to #beating NCDs in Africa.

Three years ago, my world was shattered when I lost my beloved sister due to a misdiagnosis and the late diagnosis of a kidney infection. The grief was immeasurable, plunging me into a depth of pain and depression that I had never known. As I grappled with the magnitude of my loss, I delved deep into her medical records. To my surprise, I found that during her illness, three different doctors had handled her case, each running the same tests because they lacked access to her previous medical data. This wasn’t just an isolated incident. Disease misdiagnosis, often rooted in the absence of comprehensive medical records, is a rampant issue in Nigeria. Determined to be part of the solution, I embarked on a mission to build a free and open electronic health record system tailored specifically for Africans. Today, after three rigorous years of learning and growth, I’m elated to introduce MolerHealth. MolerHealth is an open-source Electronic Health Records (EHR) application designed to transform healthcare in Nigeria. Through this project, our aim is to bridge the gap between patients and healthcare providers by offering a seamless, user-friendly platform where comprehensive health records can be accessed, updated, and shared.
