Heartfelt thanks to WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers for featuring my backgrounder on the 'Unique Media Identifiers' (UMId) Initiative. Since the Global Media Registry has launched this official ISO - International Organization for Standardization process (IWA44:2024) a few months ago, the momentum is building and we continue to identify possible use cases. The vital interest of legitimate publishers to protect their brand assets and reputation online is one of them. This requires an agnostic, machine-readable and globally interoperable source identity key for media outlets, channels and brands to distinguish them from imposters and copycats. Authentication and documentation of sources to train LLMs at scale is another increasingly important purpose to develop and implement the UMId.
A thought-provoking contribution to the debate about trust. Olaf Steenfadt has thought about how news providers can assert credibility through a unique digital media identifier - much like airlines and book publishers do.
Great work Olaf Steenfadt
