It was an honour to attend the United Nations Data for the Environment Alliance (DEAL) Summit in Vienna. Not just that, but it was a privilege to take part and share McKinsey & Company’s insight on how data can help us challenge and resolve the issues we all face. It is critical that we take a global approach to a big global challenge, and I thank the UN for bringing us together. The fact is that data is the lifeblood for enabling a positive impact on nature. But for this to happen, we need a better operating model, better standards, more interoperability and accessibility that enables data to be used in all the different ways it can help better decision making for the planet - across the myriad of diverse use cases in the public and private sector. In my client work, I’ve seen that challenges can be overcome when there is an understanding of the value and opportunity available; we must harness this to meet the obligations that we have set for ourselves and future generations. I believe the UN can play a decisive role here by convening Governments, NGOs, think tanks, private companies, regulators, supervisory bodies, and big tech companies to help shape a more standardized, interoperable nature data operating model, with modular, flexible data product blueprints, data tech approaches that make it easier for all key stakeholders to adopt them, use them, and evolve them. There needs to be a clear focus on the value and enabling every stakeholder to reap it. It was truly amazing to see how much is out there already and the passion and purpose of the deep experts coming together to discuss and start shaping a way forward. Thank you shereen zorba for inviting me to attend the UN Science Policy Business Forum on the Environment, and to my colleagues Dr. Asin Tavakoli and Alexis Trittipo for joining our McKinsey delegation. #Sustainability #Data #McKinseyTechnology #UnitedNations

Head of Oliver Wyman Digital Europe and Partner at Oliver Wyman | HERoes top 100 Women Executives 2021 | Top 50 Trailblazers in Gender Equality 2021
It was such an honour to attend the UN Science Policy Business Forum on the Environment (UNSPBF) Data for the Environment Alliance (DEAL) Working Group in Vienna last week. With 150 experts from diverse backgrounds – industry, academia, big tech, citizen science, and government there was a really unique opportunity to dive deep into the challenges of using data to make environmentally sound decisions from every angle. Here's a few of my key takeaways: There’s a need for a robust framework to share data transparently and granularly while ensuring data quality. It’s important as well to understand gaps and weaknesses in data analysis. Many of us shared the same frustration: there's a wealth of data out there, but it's often costly to access at the granularity we need, or it's scattered across the digital universe without a central catalogue. This is where it gets exciting – there’s clear opportunity to tap into the power of big tech to drive data sharing by providing the right tools, education, and collaboration platforms. Let's harness their expertise to advance our shared goals! In the spirit of collaboration, don’t stop at the experts' table. Engage citizens through education and encouraging local data collection. Sharing information that empowers individuals to make environmentally informed decisions is crucial. Perhaps the most important takeaway for me, let's not forget those most vulnerable to environmental disasters. There’s a recognition of the urgent need to accelerate upskilling, resource access, and data availability in these regions. They often lack the critical information needed to prepare and respond. It's been an incredible experience so far, and I’m 100% committed to driving positive change. Let's keep the conversation going, working together to make a positive impact on the environment. #bigdata #environment #datasharing #publicprivatepartnership #unitednations
