Don’t be fooled by the Orwellian title. From the article. Edited for length. The “decency” agenda is merely clever marketing. Even a cursory look beneath the surface reveals what this whole thing is really about. The “decency agenda” includes several “nondiscrimination” bills. One is the Freedom to Read Act, which would take away the ability of local libraries that receive state funds to regulate or restrict access to pornographic materials. Anyone paying attention to debates about the content of public school libraries over the past several years—including all the allegations of “book banning”—is familiar with the caliber of smut that the radical progressives are trying to foist upon our kids. In truth, this bill literally guarantees access to “indecent materials”—which is the term that the Maryland Code uses to describe this kind of stuff. And so we arrive at the proper definition of the word “Orwellian.” Jones may as well have declared, “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” After all, if exposing school-age children to sexually explicit materials is now the “decent” thing to do in Maryland, then words have no meaning anymore. Adults are supposed to protect the children, not groom them.

Looks like Iowa lawmakers seeking to ban books in school libraries are going to be in for it. With all of the Big Five publishers signing on to stop the Iowa Book Banning Bill from going into effect, there's a significant war chest available to opponents of the ban, and hopefully it will be enough to stop the injunction against the ban from being overturned. It's worth noting, though, that the proposed ban is sweeping in its effects and doesn't seek to remedy a widespread issue in schools that can be tied back to the books in question. Most of the stories I've seen around the need for book bans come down to a robust marketing and PR strategy to paint the presence of a couple of books as the cause of massive social ills. The groups that push these kinds of policies aren't even sophisticated in their initiatives; they just shout loudly enough to drown out the rest of the discourse until they're taken seriously. Granted, no book will be universally seen as a good and it's the right of anyone to not read books that make them feel uncomfortable. However, creating an apparatus to limit access across an entire community is only creating a weapon that can be used to limit expression in other avenues once books have become homogenized even more than they already are. #books #bookbans #publishing #marketing #pr
To censor or not to censor? Is that really the question? Shouldn't we ask - if adults can't control their urges after reading or watching sexually explicit material, then how can one expect a child to do so? Why do we have R and X rated movies? Adult only bookstores? Adult only websites? The question should be: Why would one want to expose children to sexually explicit content? What's the ulterior motive?
