Consejo para CEOs de startups en ronda o futura ronda: mantén una comunicación fluida con inversores actuales y posibles inversores. Leo en The Generalist algunos consejos para optimizar el proceso de fundraising y me identifico con este de Immad Akhund, CEO y cofundador de Mercury: mantener una comunicación constante con inversores, incluso cuando no estás en ronda. Akhund recomienda mantener conversaciones informales de 30 a 45 minutos con inversores cada seis meses, lo cual te ayudará a construir relaciones sólidas, además de que estas interacciones te brindan la oportunidad de perfeccionar continuamente tu discurso. Obviamente es importante respaldar esas conversaciones con métricas pero discrepo ligeramente con que necesariamente esas métricas han de ser positivas. En mi opinión en estos casos lo que cuenta es la honestidad. Si las métricas son positivas mejor, evidentemente, pero en cualquier caso, como CEO estás labrando una relación de confianza con tus inversores y no sólo está en juego el proceso de la futura ronda o follow-on de tus inversores, sino también tu credibilidad. Por mi experiencia como abogado, como CEO de startup en el pasado y como inversor ocasional, he visto una gran diferencia entre aquellos CEOs que mantienen una comunicación habitual con sus inversores y aquellos otros que son más reactivos y sólo comunican cuando hay una junta programada o a demanda de sus socios. En definitiva, marca estas conversaciones como un must en tus tareas. Te ayudará con tu ronda, recibirás un feedback impagable y fortalecerá tus lazos con inversores. No doubt!

Recientemente mi compañero Juan Carlos Perán Rodríguez de Vera mencionaba un artículo de TechCrunch en el que se exponía que la mayoría de los #VC no prestan atención suficiente al apartado técnico/tecnológico en las startups analizadas. Coincido plenamente con las conclusiones del artículo. Es cierto que muchos inversores se centran en aspectos financieros y de mercado al evaluar una startup, dejando de lado la importancia de contar con un CTO adecuado en el equipo fundador. En muchas ocasiones, suele ser suficiente para muchos inversores que en el equipo haya un cofundador técnico sin importar su nivel de experiencia, de modo que, quizás por desconocimiento de la materia, validan el equipo como "complementario" sin prestar más atención al expertise del CTO. Sin embargo, cada startup requiere un nivel diferente de supervisión técnica y experiencia. De hecho, la falta de atención a este aspecto puede resultar en la inclusión de cofundadores innecesarios en el Cap Table inicial, lo que a largo plazo puede ser problemático sin duda. Es fundamental que los inversores VC se involucren más en la evaluación de los CTOs de las startups, considerando no solo su capacidad para desarrollar un producto inicial, sino también su idoneidad para liderar y escalar el equipo técnico a medida que la empresa crece. En ese sentido, Technetium basa su principal diferenciación en aportar ese talento tecnológico apropiado a cada fase. La noticia de Venture Capital Journal sobre la reactivación del mercado de secundarios en VC ofrece una perspectiva relevante para el mercado de VC en general. Según el artículo, uno de los drivers de esta reactivación es un repricing real del asset class. Esto podría ser extremadamente positivo para revitalizar la inversión en startups por parte de los fondos primarios. Con valoraciones más razonables, se abre un nuevo panorama para la inversión. Adicionalmente, un aumento de las distribuciones a los LPs también puede estimular el fundrasing.
