It was great to see my article on the electrification of commercial fleets being published by Smart Energy International. With predictable routes and regular operations, most depot-based fleets are low-hanging fruits for electrification. However, the growth of localised electricity demand for fleets will pose specific challenges to our energy system. In this piece, I touch upon some of the main issues DSOs, energy suppliers and generators face as we electrify commercial road transport. Thank you Smart Energy International for the space!
Built throughout the 20th century, and as early as 1935 in the UK, European power grids were not developed to support the ongoing #electrification of everything from heating to transport, explains Francesco Nobili of Charles River Associates. https://ow.ly/SMq550QloVg

Yesterday, UK Director Olivia Powis spoke at a webinar exploring the future of the CCUS sector as part of Energy Security & Green Infrastructure Week™ by Binary Carbon. Speaking alongside experts John Picken from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Chris Thackeray from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Olivia discussed the progress to date of the CCUS industry, as well as the potential pipeline of projects across the UK, which has grown by 30% as demonstrated in our Delivery Plan Update. There is huge opportunity for CCUS in the UK, but we need to move quickly and have a long-term vision for deployment across the industry. #NetZero | #CCUS | #CarbonCapture

Some lessons here. Rates go up when you move significant amounts of intermittent wind and solar.
“The bottom line is that Olympia eliminated most baseload resources from the region without a plan to replace them,” said Barnes. “They moved ahead with decarbonization plans without time for technology —such as storage — to catch up or for new power sources to be developed.” https://lnkd.in/gAc_hPRF

ICYMI and didn’t see the news…check out our partnership with National Grid on a macroeconomic analysis for their upcoming transmission upgrade project across upstate New York! The project and West Monroe’s macroeconomic analysis were featured in T&D World. At West Monroe, we're doubling down on our commitment to helping utilities strengthen their transmission resilience, especially as extreme weather events are becoming increasingly pervasive. With hurricanes and wildfires causing more severe damage to electrical infrastructure, it's crucial for electric utilities and transmission companies to be proactive in improving their resilience. By drawing lessons from past incidents, investing in infrastructure and technology, and collaborating closely with stakeholders, the industry can better tackle the challenges of a changing climate and an increasingly unpredictable environment – and we’re here to help! Message me to hear about how we're revolutionizing transmission resilience or click here to learn more about what we do in this space: https://ter.li/yr1od7
