The Henderson Community College FAME program recently kicked off its Fall 2023 cohort with a signing day. During the celebration, 15 participants from seven local manufacturers committed to this industry-recognized degree program. Sponsors of this cohort are Accuride Corporation, Audubon Metals, Century Aluminum, Cresline Plastic Pipe Co., Inc., Gibbs Die Casting Corporation, Norsk Hydro, and International Paper. The HCC FAME program is a work-and-learn opportunity that allows participating students to earn a degree in just five semesters while gaining valuable work experience in industrial maintenance. Since its first cohort was completed in 2019, HCC FAME boasts 24 graduates and a 96% job placement rate in industrial careers. As part of HCC FAME’s seventh cohort, students will be able to take full advantage of new advanced manufacturing training equipment — including an 8-station Universal Robotics lab — recently purchased with funds from the Henderson County Fiscal Court and a Delta Regional Authority grant. The HCC FAME program also receives funding from the United Way of Henderson County. “Championing growth within our manufacturing community, we proudly support the HCC FAME program,” said Teresa Hagedorn, Human Resources Director at Gibbs Die Casting. “We believe the strength of this program is a testament to the dedication of all involved – the students, the educators, the partner companies, and the community. We are fortunate to have employed 12 students in six cohort groups. Combining on-the-job training with academic excellence leads to a successful career!” HCC President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jason Warren said, “We continue to see strong demand from local employers for multi-skilled technicians. We are proud of the HCC FAME program and its proven track record of setting its graduates up for a successful career in advanced manufacturing.” https://lnkd.in/eYXiXCjF #HenCCProud #HCCWorkforceSolutions #KCTCSWorkforceSolutions #HCCFAME #FAMEWorks #FAMEUSA

Knowledge Itself is Power – Sir Francis Bacon No matter what industry we work in, all of us are expected to continue learning about our field and doing our jobs to the best of our abilities. For some of us, we may want to earn bigger and better positions in our industry. For others, our employers or professional associations may require specific activities to make sure we are fulfilling our responsibilities. Whatever reason applies in your situation, the answer is often some form of additional training or learning. One term that is often brought up in this context is “continuing education” and InCan Consulting Group has developed the right programs for the canmaking industry. The term “continuing education” describes one type of professional development in which an employee pursues additional learning from a higher education organization to excel in his/her daily responsibilities. Continuing education can be a vital lifeline to success and worthwhile employment. Not only do canmaking industry and technologies change, but employment can also change at any time. Continuing education can be worth it because it prepares working canmakers for such eventualities. Did you find this helpful? If you are involved in mentoring student placements, recent graduates or engaged in industry – academic projects, you might find the article linked below interesting. Written from a US perspective, it estimates $320 million as the cost to industry of transitioning their 10,000 per annum chem eng graduates, because of the gap between the academic and industrial worlds. It suggests advice for industrialists, academics, fresh graduates, accreditation bodies, professional societies and government agencies. I do not agree (of course!) with all the analysis. I think with the 40+ years of Cork RTC/CIT/MTU chem eng, we anticipated many of the suggestions in trying to produce graduates that are “fit for purpose” and “culturally adjusted”. While we always considered these attributes, I think the modern Professional Placement and Industrial Research Project explicitly attempt to address these factors. Nevertheless, there is always room for continual improvement. Comments? https://lnkd.in/eZr9CKsy
