One of the most surprising leadership insights from rugby... Some of my brothers played rugby in school. What did that mean for me? Well, a significant chunk of my adolescence was spent sulking on the sidelines during practice and school games. However initial teenage resentment slowly transformed into fascination as I grasped the intricacies of the game and started to appreciate a good ruck, maul, or lineout… Yet, it wasn't the game itself that taught me the most valuable lesson; it was those post-match debriefs with my brothers. That’s when it first dawned on me: those IN the game don’t see ALL the game! Put another way, as the onlooker on the balcony I – and the coaches - could see the big picture. We saw opportunities and risks as they emerged, spotted unexpected patterns, and found new ways to win… all invisible to the players immersed in the thick of things until we shared those insights with them. It taught me the importance of “going to the balcony!” As my career progressed, I applied this same concept when working with clients on their most daunting challenges. We’d ask “What does this look like from the balcony?” I'd encourage them to describe the situation as a neutral third party might (think of it as the business equivalent of a TMO, or Television Match Official, in rugby). From this vantage point, they'd uncover hidden patterns, unveil deeper motivations, and identify fresh perspectives. This newfound clarity transformed their capacity to lead effectively, even in chaos and complexity. Where could you benefit from “going to the balcony?"  How might a third party describe that knotty problem or tricky working relationship?  What might you see there that could help you lead well today? Congratulations to both NSW and Victoria for topping the World Skills Australia Comps. On a per capita basis, solid performances too from both WA and Qld Even Tasmania deserve applause for their gutsy five silver medal performance. However South Australia's results are alarming and throw considerable doubt on the southern states much vaunted commitment to the National Shipbuilding Program and to Vocational Training generally. The Commonwealth is providing $10Billion dollars a year towards Vocational Training in Australia and frankly taxpayers need to see significant skills improvements across bench marking comps Can anyone offer an explanation? Focusing on the highest quality of training standards, employers and training providers can use the competition to benchmark their own apprenticeship and training programmes.)

What does it take to become a champion? It's women's singles finals day at Wimbledon. What an inspiration to hear from Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King. What shines from them? Their great passion for the game. They loved to play whatever tennis they could, singles, doubles, mixed doubles. BJK winning all three championships in 1967 in the UK and US. Their lifetime winnings were less that the current Wimbledon championship purse. To become expert requires great determination and years of practice. Also the support of close friends, family and colleagues to give support and encouragement. This is true for us all whatever our profession. We spend years learning and practicing our craft, often depending on others to keep up our outside responsibilities. We are told, try hard, think positively, imagine your goals ,build your brand. achieve your dreams if you want them enough. publish or perish. Success is everything. It's wrong. Most of this success is pure luck. To be great you need something else. Something that drives that determination, belief and support. It's not just winning. Most of the time we do not win. The thrill of winning is transient and not enough. To be great you need to love what you do and the people you do it with. Find the thing you love and do it the best you can. That is real greatness whatever fortune allows you to achieve. Just listen to Martina and BJK. They are not great because they were winners, they were winners because they were great.

Those of us who have been following this sport for decades know that it is much more than a coaching or tactical issue. Take a visit to Rugby Australia's board website - https://lnkd.in/gf8zPYzB A "Read More" link to details about Director nominations goes to a 404 error page. 🆗 There are pictures of 9 board directors on the main page: 📝None of the pictures or names have links to biographies or additional information. 👨🏻🦲All 9 of the board directors are white. 🧔🏻♂️6 of the 9 board directors are men. A significant percentage of Australian professional and amateur rugby union players, coaches and volunteers come from Pasifika backgrounds. Over the last 20 years, many of the Wallabies and Wallaroos highest performing players have Pasifika heritage. Yet there is no one of that background to be seen on the Rugby Australia board. 🇫🇯🇼🇸🇹🇴 No sign of First Nations directors on the board either. 🔴🟡⚫️ Research and evidence-based best-practice board methodology would suggest that having a board that more accurately reflected the diversity of its stakeholders would mitigate the systemic blind spots and increase the likelihood of success for this floundering code. Legacy organisations like Rugby Australia and national performing arts companies have a great deal of risk associated with their assumption that past success will lead to present and future success. An inability for the head to self-evaluate, ask questions, listen to stakeholders, and adopt best-practice models means that eventually, the whole fish will rot. It is a competitive market. What could help? ✅Fixed terms for board directors. ✅Diversity and accuracy of representation. ✅Space at the table for minority and devils-advocate viewpoints. ✅Adhering to peer-reviewed research. It takes humility; the assumption that there may be a better way to do things than the old ways of the “glory days.” 2023 is Rugby Australia's annus horribilis. It is now at a crossroads. Hosting a mens World Cup in 2027 won't solve all their problems. They need a new board which reflects the grassroots, customers and employees they claim to serve. #boards #governance Future Directors

So I get this question asked to me a lot "Charlotte, why Rugby" As an elite athlete myself and still competing on the international stage, I understand the importance of being happy away from the sport. If performance is not going the way you hoped 9 times out of 10 it's what is happening away from the sporting environment. I have competed at 1 Olympic Games, 2 Commonwealth Games, World and European Championships, I know what it feels like to be at the top in your sport but also have many setbacks on the way. Within my previous roles, Rugby players hold so many skills which are transferable but also have the TV coverage to make themselves more commercially aware and that is what companies love investing into. Rugby has been a passion of mine, wanting to provide the players with their needs and wants to give them the best playing opportunities. As a Player Commercial Manager I am able to use my own experience to build relationships with brands and sponsors for our players to utilise and to take all the opportunities thrown at them. So why Rugby? Being a female in a male dominant environment is challenging but I am someone who can bring in new ideas, implement change but have also represented my country on multiple occasions.
