Fascinating deep dive into the rise of lean production and how Toyota revolutionized the auto industry. Here are some key takeaways that resonated with me: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 : Lean is all about constantly identifying and eliminating waste. A valuable reminder that progress is a journey, not a destination. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 : The book emphasizes that lean isn't just about efficiency, it's about empowering employees and fostering a culture of problem-solving. A few weeks ago, I was a guest on Meaghan Ziemba’s Mavens of Manufacturing videocast, and I had a fantastic time! We chatted about so much, but one of the topics I particularly resonated with was our discussion of how women in manufacturing leadership can feel more confident in their roles—especially in an industry where the majority of the workforce (and leadership!) are men. Nothing against men, just a true statement here: women naturally have a higher level of emotional intelligence. And because manufacturing environments are typically more no-nonsense and direct than other work environments, it's critical to have emotionally intelligent leaders at the helm. So when I talk to my women manufacturing leaders, I encourage them to bring what it means to be a woman to the leadership table. When we have diversity at the table—diversity of thought, and perspective—our companies grow and move forward. We move forward. And for manufacturing especially, it’s critical that we have that diversity in order to innovate. My biggest piece of advice is to step boldly into your own version of leadership. Don’t feel like you have to mimic the male leaders you see. Who you are—and what you bring to the table—is SO needed in this industry.
