Dignity-based support systems for families in crisis should be part of ALL programs, not just the day-to-day programs.

Have you ever wondered what kind of impact Cocotree Kids is making with your support? We asked some of our partners to share more about the impact our donations have on their organization and the clients they serve. Katie O’Leary, the Homeless Prevention Manager from Wellspring House in Gloucester, MA, shared “Cocotree Kids has completely filled a void that we had a really hard time filling. What people don’t realize is the only way to secure underwear is cash. Our clients have a very limited amount of cash. They can’t buy underwear with food stamps or anything else. It is illegal to sell used underwear in Massachusetts, so we can’t even give them thrift store vouchers. This has been absolutely amazing {underwear donations from Cocotree Kids}. We have parents who have been able to keep up with their electric bills because they haven’t had to buy underwear. Cocotree Kids is the first organization that realized that need and filled it, so it’s been amazing for us.” Wellspring inspires families and adults to achieve employment and financial security through stable housing, education, job training, and career readiness. It was a mess, costing them money & space. Then Happen Ventures stepped in with our Beneficial Reuse Program. Walgreens had a big problem. Hundreds of coolers were just sitting there, taking up valuable space in their warehouse. This is how we turned this challenge into a win for everyone… 1. We checked out the coolers… 2. We got them moving… 3. We teamed up… So what does this mean for Walgreens & the community? → They cut down on storage costs. → Walgreens freed up crucial space for new products. → Local charities got much-needed equipment for their communities. → They made a positive impact on the environment by giving the coolers a second life. Eddy from a local charity told us.. “We are grateful for your donation of 214 of these beautiful coolers. We have already given some to a local fire department for their use. It seems the altruistic drive to support #charities by rounding up our change is being tested. Not because shoppers are stingy – pretty sure we still love helping shelter animals and supporting sick children. The fatigue is from the constant ask. Add to that, the somewhat blurrier lines between donations and tipping, and a smattering of unintentional over-commitments, and you get a cocktail of disgruntled consumers. Here's a sobering stat: The number of #shoppers donating at registers fell from 80% in 2021 to 59% in 2023. But before we declare this mode of charity dead, remember that these campaigns do work – generating hundreds of millions for worthy causes a year. So, the million-dollar question (pun intended): How can we keep the charity spirit alive without exhausting or confusing our consumers? Some ideas off the top of my head: Transparency Boards: Retailers can display information on how much has been raised and where it's going. Choice & Control: Let shoppers choose from a few charities. Perhaps even set a monthly cap on how much they wish to round up. Opt-In Systems: Make it a choice to opt-in for regular donations. No automatic enrollments. Charity Vouchers: Instead of direct #donations, offer vouchers that shoppers can distribute among charities of their choice. After all, as Jesy Herron's heartfelt gesture shows, sometimes we just want to see where our contributions go. Let's harness that desire, ensuring we offer avenues for charity that respect the giver's choice, while also supporting those in need.
