In a zoo or safari park, one of the “must have qualities” a Director or Operations manager needs, is not just the ability to build and inspire a great team that will help your park reach its vision and intended purpose, but also he/she must be able to hang on to that team. And one of the ways to hang on to your team is give them the freedom to produce great work, because it makes no sense to recruit staff with experience and skills and then micromanage their work. Micromanaging your team will only affect your team's morale and in the process create a very dysfunctional park to work in. When your park has the staff with the skills and experience to not just get the job done, but to get it done to a high level, you as the director need to give them the freedom to be creative and to be the very best version of themselves, while knowing that you are there in the background to support and guide them if they need help. When a director understands that they don't need to be the smartest person in the room, and allows their team to demonstrate their skills and experience, that team will then start to pull of great feats in their area of expertise, benefiting the park and those who work there. timhusband2005@gmail.com

While this seems funny at first glance, the sad reality is that this does happen from time to time within the zoo industry, particularly in places where the management of a zoo or safari park is overseen by people with poor to no management skills. These zoos or safari parks will often employed staff with little to no experience because they are cheaper than experienced staff or because they are friends or relatives of those doing the employing. If we in the zoo industry wish to continue moving ahead and be taken seriously as a professional industry, then all should shun this type of behavior. Hiring inexperienced staff to care for the collection or to oversee the daily management of the park because they are a cheaper alternative to the more experienced professionals within our industry in an attempt to save a few dollars, is often the mistake made by poor managers and is a sure fire recipe for disaster. The saying "you get what you pay for" is definitely true in the case of your park. If the staff caring for the collection, guiding, or management only consider their position as just a job and have no passion for what they do, then how can anyone except them to do their job to a high level and to have any loyalty to your zoo or safari park. timhusband2005@gmail.com

I recently had the opportunity to be back on set for another amazing project and am already diving into planning the next production🏎️ One aspect that I believe is incredibly underestimated: the location. It can make or break everything. Location scouting is a crucial part of production. Here's my approach: ▪️ I start by reviewing the creative concept. If no specific locations are mentioned, I identify the requirements the location needs to meet. ▪️ Then, it's all about research, research, and more research. What are the needs? What kind of nature or environment is required? What weather is needed? ▪️ Once I narrow it down to a country or general area, I dive into Google Maps and Street View. ▪️After narrowing down to a few locations, I consider: How far is the location from our base? Is it easily accessible? Are there any on-site risks? Where can we obtain filming permits? Are there sanitary facilities available, etc.? ▪️Another crucial aspect: the mood of the content. Sunrise or sunset? The position of the sun is essential, and I check this in advance too. ▪️Finally, the most important step: visiting the locations in person to assess the actual conditions. Sometimes, access is more challenging than anticipated, or an unexpected construction site can throw off plans. These are things you can't foresee without being there. But the absolute highlight of location scouting is: you get to see an incredible number of amazing places around the world 🌎 What are your challenges and tricks for location scouting? Looking forward to hearing your stories! :) #production #location #content #purelei
